while sitting still in or out of the water my trim works well up and down. while moving in the water it is slow to move up and i can't trim the motor up. also if the motor is tilted up slightly and i take of it will sit itself down. i have noticed a leak on the starboard side trim cylinder and was wandering if this fluid leak at the top of the cylinder could cause this problem. also when i open the throttle up from a stop like to pull a skier it feels as though the transmision is slipping. i know it doesn't have an actual trans. but that is what i feels like. i was wandering if i wasnt able to trim the motor right (and have it stay there without leaking down) on take offs if these problems are related. as long as i take of fairly slow and then gas it the motor will not slip. anyone with any ideas? thanks.

I think the issues may be related, but it's easy to check.

Prop.

Make a mark on the prop shaft. Make a corresponding mark on the prop hub. Run the engine as you normally would. Check the marks, they should remain in the same relation to one another. If not, your prop hub is slipping.

Solution-replace the prop.

Trim.

You are probably low on fluid.

There is a large screw on the trim pump/reservoir assembly.

Lift the engine all the way up. Block it in place so that it cannot fall.

Remove the screw, mentioned above, and fill the reservoir with trim fluid.

Replace the screw and cycle the unit up and down several times.

While you are at it, check the manual release valve on the side of the trim unit. Make sure it is snug.

With all that done, watch your trim cylinder ram leak as you use the unit. You may have to keep refilling the unit until you can service the ram.

I would NOT attempt servicing the ram, without a manual.

also, to marck the prop do i need to remove the nut and thrust washer?

and do you know of a manual of site to show teardown and instructions of the trim cylinder it is leaking in the center where the ram goes through.

also what about a seal kit for this.local boat dealer said obsolete.

1977 85 johnson
model#85etlr77s
serial#j4767021

Sounds like you may need to reseal the trim rams. The parts diagrams are available on line from the BRP.com website. While your trim system has not been avalable for many years, you should be able to get the replacement seals you need from any Evinrude/Johnson dealer.

Re: 1977 85hp johnson trim problem

i called two dealers around here they both said they couldn't get the seals. so i tore down the ram that was leaking and just put some o-rings from napa in there.

also the prop nut was only hand tight so i looked in the manual and tightend it to procedure.

i took the boat out yesterday and it performed perfectly.
if anyone knows where to get the seal kit please let me know. thanks to everyone for the help.
