I have a 40 HP Mariner engine that was stored for a little over a year. It is running rough and will not idle longer than 5-10 minutes without dying. All fuel lines have been replaced and gas tanks cleaned. I would like to tear the carbs down and clean them but I cannot find a website with photos... Any sugestions? Is this a big deal to do I do most car work myself so I am mechnaically inclined.

Also I saw on a post that we should not add oil to empty gas tanks... Won't the gas dissolve the oil? What if I already did this but drove it around for 1 hour before I started the engine.

Lastly, are fuel stabilizers and fuel additives any good, or should we just stick to outboard oils that have that TW-C3 stuff... What about synthetic fuel oil additive...

Thanks a million all :D

two ideas,Mercury.Com or Dougrussell.com may at least supply you an exploded view of the carb. The factory manual is a lot better, aftermarket manuals not really that good on detail.

DHP

Listen to DHPMARINE's advice, get the factory manual. You can probably clean em' with out the manual, just take some pictures to be sure you put everything back in EXACT order. You can get some gasket kits from your local mercury dealer or through the websites DHP mentioned.

Thanks guys, yes I do agree with DHP after market manuals lack in picture quality, I figure I will run over to the Cabela's super store and get me a Merc., factory manual... Any advice on the other stuff?

I like to use mercury oil, but any TC-W3 oil good for use. I like to add fuel stabilizer every time I fill, which isn't necessary, just in case I come into a situation where I wouldn't be able to use the boat for a prolonged period. Always seems to happen in Sept!

Re: 40 HP Mariner Carb Problems

Thanks guys I did as andy3674 sugessted and cleaned the carbs without the manual, took photos and cut new gaskets myself and the boat fired on the first try and is now running really good... Thanks for saving me a bundle of money.. It is amazing what a little residue can do to a carb.

Another question... If am using the boat at least once a week should I run the carbs dry after every outing?

Once a week, no need to drain the fuel bowls.

How resourceful, you cut your own gaskets, nice job.
