Transom Question - 1977 Chrysler 16' Bass Pro

Thanks for your reply Scott Danforth. Much appreciated. I like the 2nd option. I'm not familiar with the term "old inner skin tabbing." Can you help me on that? I'll soon give it the All American try and see how it goes. I also have angle grinders. I'll update with photos as well.

    Rivet Bucking

Thanks DeepCMark58A. Your advice is well taken and one that I would have not paid too much attention to. A friend of mine used to add rivets to aluminum boats in Wisconsin and he warned me about ear protection. I learned the hard way about ear protection, even when I was flying a Cessna back in...

My 1977 16' Chrysler Bass Pro has a transom width of 58". The thickness is 1 1/2" and is made with 3/4" plywood (x2). The vertical height is 20" and 26" wide in the center of the transom The top on each side is 7" vertical from the top of the transom and 15" wide. The transom is comprised of 3...

    Rivet Bucking

I have an 89 14' Lund and will be adding several rivets to the hull. Is there a critical temperature range for adding rivets to an aluminum boat? I don't want to crack the holes, due to cold metal, when riveting. The weather outside now is between 40-45 degrees F. Thanks for your replies.

    Caulking Release

Thanks Lectro88 - Appreciated. Have been working on my son's 14' 89 Lund during the last couple of weeks. Replaced the seat benches and added a Striker 4. I'll send some pictures when I'm done. But I ran into an old man's problem. Measured the triangle plywood on the bow of the boat and figured...

    Caulking Release

Thanks garbageguy: I have the boat about naked now, cleaned up and ready for the real work of stripping out all the ugly wood and starting the rebuild process, once I can get the wind settled down a bit and the temperatures don't freeze me out. I won't create fiberglass dust in my garage, due to...

    Transom Drilling and Checking

Lectro88, you got me on this one. I'm on board with the negative hole saw. I just saw a photo of a plug on the forum somewhere, but didn't realize you can leave all the old glass intact as you add a new transom. Now I'm on to research the appropriate methods for transom replacement and type of...

    Transom Drilling and Checking

Thanks kcassells, how do I go about that? I'm understand the logic of it, but am wondering how you can reply to all the contributors in a single thread. Thanks and I'll look forward to more help or research about this.

    Transom Drilling and Checking

Lectro88, Thanks for your help. This is great information and it brings to my mind the possibility of a new "library" on this forum. Type in a few key words: transom, rot, drill, test, etc., etc., and your picture shows up, along with the associated comments. Not a bad idea eh? I am almost...

    Transom Drilling and Checking

Chris1956, I think I can detect some slight variations in transom sound when tapped with a hammer and I believe it warrants further inspection. Having gone this far, it just makes sense to replace the transom if it is indeed compromised. But I'm still curious. You say that core drilling invites...

    Transom Drilling and Checking

Thanks for the information. Much appreciated. Are you saying, I don't need to drill with a hole saw bit so I can see the core? Just pay attention to the color and moisture content of the shavings? Thanks again for your reply.

    Caulking Release

10/15/2021 - Ok, so far so good. Here are photos of where I am today. Front of cap is supported by under-hoist jacks so I can open the garage door without issues. Rest of cap is supported by ratchet straps suspended from ceiling. I can now pull the hull and trailer outside to start work on the...

    Transom Drilling and Checking

I've noticed some folks recommending a transom core drill to ensure that the transom is not rotted. Here are my questions. What size core drill is commonly used and what techniques are used to replace a good core? Epoxy resin? 1/4" or so Chamfer inside and out? Where are the common sites for...
