When I crank my Merc 500 50 HP with the plugs removed and the timing light on it should I be reading TDC or somewhere close depending on where the dist advance is turned? Where should these engines start up at on the timing? I know a car will kickback if you have to much advance timing on them.
Can the magneto spark get out of time with the flywheel. I can only keep my Merc 500 running with about 20 degrees of timing at idle. The distributor and TDC are correct and compression is good. The carbs are rebuilt, fuel line are new. I checked the dist and it was dirty but not cracked or...
I can get it running by taking the fast idle timing advance cable loose and working it and working the throttle plate on the advance to open the carb butterflies. I am under the impression that it should idle without opening the butterflies. It also require a lot of timing 20 to 24 deg. to stay...
