Ruh-Roh… a new gear case may be in order

This is what I’m getting. I think it covers everything? The gear case is off of a 60 hp VRO. It matches up to my E-tec 40. I only had to change the water pump housing and the shifter rod.

What does the “ water pump upper “ refer to? The housing? I have a complete pump kit on order as well as a gear case seal kit

Ruh-Roh… a new gear case may be in order

So ya I reached in with a hook and finagled the pinion gear around and got it out. Woohoo! I don’t see any obvious signs of wear or damage to anything, except for the water pump housing. Are there any certain parts that I should just replace just because they’re 30+ years old? The silver thing...

I must be missing something man. I pushed the shift rod down and removed it. I can’t get the pinion gear out. Until it comes out nothing else does either. LOL Do I need to remove the bearing in the driveshaft housing and take the pinion out that way?

Ok I’m at that point but I’m finished for tonight. I haven’t taken the shift rod out yet. Driveshaft is out, but the pinion gear is in the way from getting the rest out.

Edit: I went and back through the beginning and saw racerones post about reverse gear falling out, etc. if racerone, or anyone else sees this and would share some advice what I should be looking for as far as worn out parts that I should replace that would be much appreciated

Ruh-Roh… a new gear case may be in order

So here it is. Finally! I had to make some custom tips to get the snap ring out, got started on the 2nd one and the damn thing broke. I had to creative with a die grinder and got the 2nd one out. If any one cares to chime in, the gears don’t seem to want to come out. I’m not sure if I need to...

As I said my buddy told me that he was going to order some snap ring pliers for me but I havent seen em. I'm not sure if he has done it yet. In the meantime I think Im going to order these. Would these work? They should definitely provide the leverage needed to get those retaining rings out...

    2026 NFL/CFB News and Nonsense

As a fan of the Broncos since 1977 I was pretty disappointed Sunday morning to see this: I don’t think they have much of a chance in the championship game. Not without Nix. He, along with some luck, kept them in the game against buffalo. Idk much about the backup QB. I’m sure he’s been working...

If there were a new outboard, there would probably not be a new shop. LOL

Ruh-Roh… a new gear case may be in order

Thanks! In the photo above from April I had a pair of long snap ring pliers that I borrowed from work. I had to make some extensions and was able to get those snap rings out of the broken blue gear case but for the life of me I couldn’t get them out of the white replacement unit. I was telling...

Ruh-Roh… a new gear case may be in order

So here’s how my concrete is being used. I haven’t touched the outboard since my last post about it back in April. Getting this shop finished up took all my time. I do have the proper pair of long reach snap ring pliers on order to get the gear case apart. Shop is pretty much done with the...
