Yeah I was noticing that...where it installs on the gimbal though (stud?) should carry the connection through tho, no? I don't really want to tear the whole thing apart to get connectivity but not sure what I am left with at this point.
It's a 20ft Glastron bow rider and I can assure the anodes do corrode in the fresh water I am in. The rest of the anodes (trim + prop + drive plate) are all fairly pitted after last season. The gimbal anode was the only one that is smooth as the day she was manufactured.
Cleaned the snot out...
Just replacing my anodes and noticed the old on the gimbal housing has no wear. Grabbed a multimeter and sure enough no connection to ground/other anodes. There doesn't look to be direct anode to outdrive contact because this is the one with the small gasket so I assume the connection comes...
My first thought was gear lube and smelled it, does not smell like merc gear lube at all. We did lose a bit of level in the bottle this year BUT I drained and refilled the drive while it was off last fall so once the air worked it’s way out the level dropped. Or at least that’s what I told myself!
That would be on the drive side then, which would make it gear oil? I did do the impeller last year and pressure tested, held up just fine unless it gave out this year.
Pulled my drive (Alpha One Gen 2) today after being in the water since May. Tiny little bit of what looks like liquified grease in the bottom of the bellows. Definitely green grease but runnier than usual. Doesn't stink link gear oil. U-joints and gimbal seem clean though. Not sure if this is...
It’s aluminum. I refuse to run stainless on Georgian Bay as I value my outdrive.
Noise/vibration started just after the bump. U-joints, gimbal are only 4 years old.
So Georgian Bay got me yet again. We were puttering down a channel quite slowly (~7-9 MPH) not on plane, when we dinged the outdrive (Alpha, Gen2) off a rock. Middle of the channel but the water is down right now ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Anyway, I inspected from the swim platform and the prop seems OK, no...
Going into my second winter with a Mercruiser 4.5 250hp. Last winter I winterized more or less "by the book" and drained the block, topped up the block with pg antifreeze by the topside blue plug on left of engine (looking aft), then ran on muffs to introduce antifreeze through the whole system...
Good idea about greasing the contact points of the gimbal. Definitely greased everything else, o-rings, splines, big o-ring, u-joint middle section, front of drive that goes into bell housing.
I also have never seen an o-ring come apart like that. Took me a while to figure out where this...
