Fresh fish has no fishy smell. Old spoiled fish smells. Been to both places.
yep , catching your own is the best way but the down side , for me any way , is that when you are reduced to having to buy fish nothing seems fresh .
I was complaining at the girl ( she's only about 40 ) at the fish shop and she tells me that "fresh " can be 5 days old . This came about because the 45 bucks worth of fish I bought last time , she told me it was fresh , anyhow we put it in the grocery frozen bag with the frozies , drove 30mins to home , put it in the fridge . 24 hrs later I opens the plastic bag and it fair ponged . I was real brave and cooked it but we didnt eat it .

I only buy thawed fish. NEVER anything frozen. I bring a big ziplock bag to carry opened up packaged fish, or other sea foods. I cut the food bag open and smell it all over. Then put it into the zippered freezer bag. Take home and cut up into serving sizes. Seal them in the Vacuum Sealing machine.
Restaurants cook & serve very stink seafood. I go into the kitchen and tell them to stop cooking spoiled seafood and giving people the shits all night.
I sometimes need the manager as a cook tries to B S me.
Only bad bacteria gives seafood that odd smell.

Tomorrow targeting for marlin, usually fresh water fishing but this is another thing. Time to relax from thinking in my outboard.

My wife and I went over to our favorite lunker hole last evening. Unfortunately, the entire pond was covered in scum. We fished anyway. :sneaky:

My wife caught a number of bluegill, which she used for bait. She did get a couple of big bites, but couldn't get them in.

I only got one bite just after sundown, using a Senko, but I didn't even get the hook set. I was too busy blabbing.

A couple days ago I bought a 9 foot spinning rod combo deal from Walmart. It was pre-spooled with 17 pound test line. I'd hoped to be able to cast my lures much farther across the pond with the new rig, but it didn't happen. I only reached about the same distance as my regular rods. I figure the heavier line plus the light lure weight was the cause. I guess I need to buy heavier baits! 😂

It was still nice being out there. A young (30s) veteran joined us out there and he and I had a nice conversation until after dark and my wife was insisting that we go home! I would have kept going! 😝
