How do I access the foam?

I think I have some wet foam towards the stern of my 22' SportCraft. She sits low in the stern, and I'm not getting near the speeds I think I should (22-25 mph gps). What little foam I can see is under the access for the fuel tank, and that foam is dry. To port and starboard of the fuel tank...

    Kill switch lanyards

Rather than derailing another post, is there a size boat that the lanyard is no longer required? Or maybe a year when they became standard? I have a 1984 22', and it does not have a lanyard, or any evidence of one having ever been there. Anyone know?

    Bogging down - Part 2

Hi everyone. This may be long, but I want to give you the most info in hopes of increased chances of a better diagnosis. Here's what I've got; 1984 SportCraft with original (1984) Merc 488r (aka 170) 3.7L with Alpha I Gen I. Bought the boat about a month ago, and the previous owner hadn't...

I guess I was going too slow for him...

As a boater keeps his boat in a wet slip, I sometimes feel that I'm missing out when it comes to the boat ramp follies. But every once in a while, I get to see boaters in action doing ridiculous things. Take today for example; We decided to take a nice short cruise after we closed the chop...

    Snorkeling at Ft DeSoto

I plan on taking the kids snorkeling next weekend at Ft DeSoto to check out the ruins. Has anyone done this? I know it's a tourist area (what isn't around here), but I'm wondering if it's stupid busy during the weekend. I may do it during the week if it is. Anything in particular I should know...

Moth Balls as a fuel additive?

So I have an acquaintance (that's as close as I'll associate myself with him) who puts moth balls in his gas tank every fill up. He either puts in one for every 2 gals, or 2 for every gal, can't remember. He claims more horsepower, and better fuel economy. He says when he was in the military, he...

Am I running the right prop?

I'll start off with my info: 1) Performance issue you are trying to correct. increase rpm's at WOT 2) Current prop manufacturer, model, aluminum or stainless and as a minimum. Here's what I do know - It's a SS Quicksilver with a 19" pitch. I'm not sure of the diameter, but I believe it to be...

What to do with crap fuel?

Need to get the fuel out of my tank. I've been having runability issues with the new boat, and ran it today on fresh fuel in a topside tank without a single hiccup (until I used it all up :) ). So now I have roughly 40 gallons of 'bad' gas I need to remove and do away with. I have two 5gal jerry...

Hooking up to a Jerry can

May sound simple, but... how exactly do you run straight from a gas can? I'm having afuel related issue, and I need to confirm or rule out gas as the culprit. I've got a Mercruiser I/O, and I'm thinking I'll connect a line at the intake side of the FW separator. My has to do with the fact the...

    Confrontational Posts

What's the deal lately? Seems to be a lot of confrontational posts lately. Especially when it's science-related. What gives? Anyone else feeling this way?

    What spares?

Just wondering what you guys keep spares of stuff on board, like fuses, filters, oil, etc. Have you ever been in a situation where you said, 'Dang! I knew I should have kept a spare of that on board!"? If so, what was it? ***EDIT - There I go again, posting in the wrong place again. Mods, can...

    Fuel Water Separators.... Another Q

So I pulled the FW Separator from my I/O, so I could get the cartridge number to replace it. Turns out, it's this one: http://www.iboats.com/Clear-Site-Water-Separating-Fuel-Filter-Canister-Only-Mercury-35-60494-1-Moeller/dm/*******.704959895--**********.656350873--view_id.367762 Ok, but...

    Moderators - List?

Who are the mods for which forums? Or are all of you Mods for all the forums? It would be nice if there was a list of mods and their respective forums in case we have a) suggestions b) complaints. Just sayin' :)

    Part number?

I need a new bowl for the fuel filter at the fuel pump for my 84 488/170. It's the metal bowl that contains the fuel filter below the pump. I've been searching iboats, and can't come up with the part. Any ideas of a part number or the proper name for it?

    Adding a 2nd Bilge Pump

I want to add a second bilge pump (1200gph) for a number of reasons. It will be an automatic (either built in float, or separate float switch), and I'm wondering about plumbing and wiring. Current (manual) pump discharges on the port side out the transom, so I'm thinking have the 2nd discharge...

    Increasing rpm's without changing prop?

Boat is a 1984 SportCraft 222 walkaround, weight approx 4500lbs (per nada). Engine is a Merc 3.7 488 (170) 188hp. Outdrive is Alpha I Gen I. Prop is a Quicksilver SS with 19 pitch, which I'm not sure if that's the pitch originally on the boat. Owner's manual says WOT should be between 4400-4800...

    Anchor Line Thickness

I'm sure this belongs in the General Boating forum, but it's a question I would ask dockside... Move it as you deem necessary oh great Mods.. :) What size anchor rode (thickness) should I use for a 22' boat, with a weight of approx. 4500lbs? I have 200' of 3/8", but not sure if that's the...

Can you mix E10 with Rec90?

As many of you know, I had a fuel related issue with the new to me boat. Was convinced it was water in the fuel from the E10, but after verifying with Kolor Kut, there was no water in the fuel. It turns out the fuel filter to the carb was clogged. Easy (and cheap) fix. So I'm back on...
