Shift Cable Issues= Alpha One Gen1

Thanks for the advice. I have rechecked the slide cable and the guide is all the way in and tight. I think I am going to split the drive again. The drive goes into all three positions when it's out, but won't with the drive is attached to the bell housing. When it's lock in forward gear, it...

Shift Cable Issues= Alpha One Gen1

Thanks so much for the links. I have watched these videos and many others, but I must of done something wrong, When I push in the cable after installing the drive, I think it disengages the out drive. With the outdrive removed, pushing the cable all the way in disengages the slide, maybe by 1/2"...

Shift Cable Issues= Alpha One Gen1

So, I thought I would start a new thread, since I am second guessing myself. I have 1986 Alpha One, Gen 1, that I replace the water pump in the outdrive and all the bellows, along with the lower shift cable. I have used the manual and the great wealth of information on the forum. But I can't...

I screwed up install of lower shift cable?

Cool, I checked out the video, very helpful. I was not sure how much travel each cable has. I will go out and check my adjustments, but it looks like the moving the lower connection up in the slot should get me into reverse. I am feeling better about the out drive shoe, since if it was off by...

I screwed up install of lower shift cable?

Thanks for the picture. I did loosen that bolt and put in the lowest position. Today I put the drive back in, double checked that the drive was actually in forward gear with the shoe pointing forward. Removed the upper and lower cable and went by the book and got it together. Now I can't put it...

I screwed up install of lower shift cable?

Thanks for the response. I am pretty sure I got the cable fully seated in the housing at the drive end. When you say adjust the cable inside, are you talking about the threaded on section with the jam nut or the post that mounts to the end of the cable? I don't see the adjustment there, but will...

I screwed up install of lower shift cable?

Thanks for the feedback, So I pulled the drive off, checked the cable for movement, and it moves easily with it connected at engine. With the drive on, I don't get enough travel to get into reverse. I have the drive removed currently. I did split the drive to replace the oil o ring, so maybe I...

I screwed up install of lower shift cable?

Howdy, Finishing up replacing my bellows and installed a new shift cable. Put the outdrive back on, made sure the "shoe" was lined up. When I went to put the drive cable connection on the motor, I pushed it all the way in and it did not lock up the propeller. I must of messed up with the cable...

Alpha One Gen 1- Reassembly bellows questions...

Gotcha, I typed my response too fast..... I do have the right tool too, so now I will wait to it cools down a bit to get on it. A bit warm in the Northwest ;-) Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it.

Alpha One Gen 1- Reassembly bellows questions...

Ok, Looks like the best route forward is to disassemble and reassemble with the u joint bellows attached to the bellhousing. Should I attach the exhaust bellows to the bell housing too?

Alpha One Gen 1- Reassembly bellows questions...

Anyone else have a magic tip on how to do the u-joint bellows when its attached to gimbal housing. I don't see a way to tighten the clamp..... Any advice is appreciated

Alpha One Gen 1- Reassembly bellows questions...

Thanks for the response. Looks like I am in trouble, since I attached the u-joint Bellows to the gimbal housing first, and now I am trying to put the bell housing on. I did get the water hose attached and shift cable installed. So, should I pull it all a part and start over, or is there a way to...

Alpha One Gen 1- Reassembly bellows questions...

Thanks for the feed back, I did use the molded water hose. Seemed easier to attach it to the bell housing first, then push the gimbal side into place. Hose clamp was a pain, but it worked. Now I am ready for the U joint bellows, and I don't see how to tighten the clamp. I checked the factory...

Alpha One Gen 1- Reassembly bellows questions...

SO, finally got my trim sensors replaced, now it's time to reassemble the rest of the drive. I have watched a few videos, looked over the factory manual, and I think I am ready! I got all Mercruiser original parts, adhesive, and tools on hand, but want to make sure I have the sequence down. Any...

Alpha one, Gen 1 trim wire retainer bolts?

Thanks for all the kind words of encouragement. I got it in, using\a right angle screw driver to align the top bolt, tighten the bottom one a bit and used my fingers to get it started. Then I used my 1/4 flex socket to put it in.... Next step coming up.......

Alpha one, Gen 1 trim wire retainer bolts?

Replacing the trim wire sensors on my 1986 Mercruiser. Got it all apart, and was running the new trim wire sensors. On the wire retainer, I can get the bolt on the bottom easily, but the top one is not wanting to thread in. I have tried it with the bottom loose, tight and in-between, and I can't...

I think I found where my drive was leaking oil while in storage....

Update. got it back together, pressure testing right now, and holding at 15lbs. Should be good to go. Thinking I should do my bellows and lower shift cable. Cable is over 10 years old, and I assume it does wear? Bellows look fine, but are 8 years of freshwater use...... thoughts?

I think I found where my drive was leaking oil while in storage....

Greetings all. My boat was stored in my shop all winter, but I did notice that the cardboard under the drive had a oil stain on it. The boat is a 1986 with an alpha one, gen 1 dive. Did a quick pressure test, and the pressure dropped within a hour. I pulled the case apart, and it looked like the...
