My Skag got worn down, I had a power failure

Part of the job of a skeg is protecting the propeller If it is shorter than the prop, your prop can get damaged when hitting a rock. There are skeg repair units that slide over the damaged skeg and that way you can fix it. Or you can have an extension piece welded on

    Required Safety Course

There are a lot of states where the license is required and other states where it is not. NYS has been requiring a boating certificate for different age groups for a few years now. This year is the first that it is required for all ages. There are some funny exceptions. If you rent a boat or if...

    Required Safety Course

If your residency is Florida, then as far as NY State is concerned you are from out of state. The law in NYS says that the boater safety certificate is not required for out of state boaters. It does not address boat ownership, only residency

Towing a 22 foot Islander that was changed from I/O to outboard on bracket.

It is not the weight as much as the weight distribution when on the trailer

Towing a 22 foot Islander that was changed from I/O to outboard on bracket.

The Islander is a 1989 Starcraft Islander 221 currently powered with a new ( factory rebuilt) 4.3 liter engine with a cobra outdrive. Sorry about that. I sometimes just take things for granted.

Don’t see where I can post parts for sale?

This is what you get when you mix an info harvester with AI. Add to that a sign up almost 4 years ago with a first post today and you know that there is trouble on the firewall front

    Turbo tax

In fact I do and it is free in NY but these online companies make you pay for "services" not the actual filing. Although you must be a wizard to unravel it.

    Turbo tax

I have used both H&R Block and Turbo tax. H&R is more user friendly. At least last year, H&R allowed me to do everything and only at the end it asked me to pay to send the taxes in. In comparing the two, I find that H&R explains things better while Turbo just throws you back to federal or...

    Autopilot question.

That is all very true. In my case, the only water I fish is anywhere between 80 and 600 feet deep, with charter boats whose captains believe that the water is theirs and theirs only and their spreads 100 feet wide and up to 600 feet long. That makes auto pilot nice to work with but not something...

    Autopilot question.

What you describe sounds like having to point the nose at 270 degrees to run at 250 degrees. That is easy when you are not dragging trolling gear, or copper. Oh well, maybe the water I may run through holds its own surprises.

    Autopilot question.

That sounds like a lot of learning. It was never my intention to to set a course for port. It is an auto pilot for a kicker , not a main engine. I am thinking in terms of returning to a freshly marked spot where I caught a fish

    Autopilot question.

I have a Garmin Echomap uhd93sv and a Garmin reactor 40 auto pilot, they are connected through MNEA 2000. Does this mean that I can mark a spot on my navigation screen and the auto pilot will take me there? I am painfully aware of my lack of electronical savvy and the result is that I often under...

    Looking for old fasteners

I have seen plenty of those in Ikea build it yourself furniture in all sort of sizes and shapes. My bet is that you will find them in any wood workers hobby store. Finding them in brass may be a bit harder, but they too should be plentyful.

    flat line trolling for trout

The joke was not on the fish ,but on me. What I meant to say is that we may have great theories on animal behavior in general and even write books about it. In the end however, these animals are always full of surprises and very often behave quite differently from what they are "supposed "to...

    flat line trolling for trout

There is one thing I forgot to mention. That is trout feeding habits. Usually rainbows feed on bugs and small stuff like that. It is only when they reach about 20 inches that they will start feeding on small fish. Although there is of course a transition period. Once they change their diet to...

    flat line trolling for trout

That may be so. I just described the way that fish is supposed to behave. The only problem is that fish don't know how to read.

Conversion from I/O to outboard on Islander.

I did not even think about that problem. Thanks for making me aware of it. My plan is to either have a 25 inch or a 30 inch shaft, but after what you said I will move to the 30 inch shaft length.

    flat line trolling for trout

Your fishing grounds sound a lot like Central Massachusetts You should start with water temperature at the different depths and knowledge about underwater springs. Trout are very sensitive to temperatures and a degree more or less is often crucial. In winter check out where the warmest water is...

Conversion from I/O to outboard on Islander.

Yes it is a Starcraft Islander. In my opinion it is the best towable great lakes boat. The I/O to outboard conversion is probably going to happen on a 1983 22 foot Sylvan , which is a Starcraft in but name and location of the fuel tanks

Conversion from I/O to outboard on Islander.

The sample pictures that I used are from a 1985 Boston Whaler 18 Outrage that was originally outfitted with a sea drive. The problem with the sea drive is the 30 inch setback from the transom which makes towing for longer road trips very hard on the transom. With only a setback of 12 inches and...
