Lubricating starter motor shaft 5.0 MPI

Page 1B-58 of Mercruiser Service Manual #31 (October 2001) details a procedure for lubricating the starter motor shaft. It says to remove a plastic plug from the flywheel housing and lubricate the shaft with motor oil. I currently have the back of the boat taken apart for other maintenance...

    Leak into bilge, bellows?

Good point. You stated back on post 29 that the alignment was good prior to bearing install....so yes the motor mounts is probably a rabbit hole. Admittedly I've never had to install a gimbal bearing. I had one installed 900 hours ago, back when they were still greasable, and it's still...

    Leak into bilge, bellows?

Nola Mike may have hit the nail on the head. Take pics of your rear engine mounts and post them. I had one fail. If I looked hard enough I could actually see the engine leaning to one side. If this the case it will never align correctly.

    Adding third toon

Hmm interesting. Also, have you checked out the T.A.P. fin system you could install on the other two toons? You'd be rolling then.

    Leak into bilge, bellows?

That's a nice one Lou. The beauty of yours is the prop doesn't have to come off. Yours probably has height adjustment also.

    Going straight at low speed?

It's akin to riding a bicycle real slow. If you don't keep turning the front wheel to compensate for balance you'll fall. Going fast problem is greatly reduced.

    Adding third toon

Doesn't adding a toon create trailering problems? Can the new toon hang unsupported over time?

    Going straight at low speed?

Mine would not stay generally straight. It would flat run into the bank if left unattended. I installed Nauticus Smart Tabs. Doesn't eliminate the wander but greatly helps. Plus other benefits.

    Leak into bilge, bellows?

I can also vouch for the last 3/4 inch being difficult. What has worked for me is shaking the drive in some way, small quick movements just trying to create some vibration, while pushing inward.

    Leak into bilge, bellows?

I made one very similar to yours. Helps tremendously, especially at now 65.

pieces of something when taking lower unit off

Probably got a piece of debris caught in there and damage occurred while trimming down onto it. Any damage to exhaust bellows?

    Leak into bilge, bellows?

Your picture is puzzling. It appears the upper shift shaft is elevated above the lower. Are you sure you got the two halves mated back together correctly?

    17 vs 19 vs 21 Pitch?

What is your current prop, make, model, aluminum, steel? Depending on your budget consider going to one of Mercury's higher end props such as the Enertia. It comes in 1 inch pitch increments so you can get it dialed in better and this prop is a known top performer

pieces of something when taking lower unit off

I was thinking shutters to but I don't think the metal in them is near that thick. The casting piece is puzzling. DuKn, look up into the driveshaft housing and see if there's damage anywhere.

pieces of something when taking lower unit off

It's only used to slide the seal down the shaft onto the impeller housing. It's intended to set the seal evenly all around rather than doing it with your fingers. Then you remove it and toss in the trash.

pieces of something when taking lower unit off

The large donut shaped piece looks like the seal setting tool that was not supposed to be left in the drive. Not sure about the others.

Sad Day For the SS United States

Following this with interest pretty neat to see. Just wondering, is, or how is, the tug being refueled on the journey?
