    1978 Evinrude 70HP- Trouble starting/idling/bogging under load

Thrust pads. Your T & T has three cylinders or rams. Big one in the middle tilts the outboard. The two twins are the trim rams. They are used to change the attitude of the boat. (Nose up or nose down). The engine has two little (nickel size) stainless pads that the two rams push on when the...

    1978 Evinrude 70HP- Trouble starting/idling/bogging under load

Not sure what you mean by a "motor stand" but it just needs to hang in the air right behind the boat from a picking eye on the fly wheel or something else just not the clamps. At that point you can attack it. Not always an easy job. You might want to service that trim unit though. Have you...

    Johnson Outboard ID

They make new units that you can buy but you have to purchase the adapter cord with it. You should have the big red plug in back at the motor. I think your remote is a 79 series but I forget. Any remote similar to that.... that has a big red plug at the motor, you can use. Yours has the trim...

    How to test VRO system

Start it on a measured amount of fuel in a portable container. This fuel should have 50 to 1 oil in it just in case the vro is dead. Then put in a measured amount of oil in your own contraption with a clear tube feeding it. After idling it for awhile do the math. At idle it should be between...

    Evinrude 9.9 carb question

If it stays running with the needle all the way in then something is wrong obviously. Something not sealing the fuel or maybe the float is off.

    Bad rectifier or stator??

Agree with above. Do an ohm test to the rectifier....it could be toast now. At idle not much voltage is made.

    1978 Evinrude 70HP- Trouble starting/idling/bogging under load

Your temp wire and horn are working.....but you don't know if your temp sender is. It's probably fine but buy a cheap IR gun at harbor freight and shoot the top of the head after warm up. Poor man's method is to put your hand on top of the head....should be hot but not scalding. IR gun...

    1978 Evinrude 70HP- Trouble starting/idling/bogging under load

The alarm sensor, which is just an automatic switch that grounds the horn located up at the box or dash when your motor reaches 145 to 150 degrees, is located with the right arrow. Pull apart the black rubber cover on the wire or stick something long and skinny that's metal in it and ground it...
