    OMC / Mercruiser Transom Cutout

I am wondering if the transom cutout is the same for a 1989 OMC 5.7 260 Cobra, vs a 1994 Mercruiser 5.7 with an Alpha drive? Thanks

1992 OMC Ford 302 Cracked Block

A friend of mine did not winterize his boat properly, and now has a cracked block with water running out of the block itself, and water now in the oil. His block is obviously toast. The Cobra drive is fine. With OMC being long gone, what are the options available for replacing the motor? Will...

    Possible Trim Or Battery Issue?

1995 Bravo 2 drives. Here is the issue: I have 3 batteries, house, 1 and 2. All are charged and have tight connections. With both battery switches in the off position, my starboard trim operates just fine, both up and down. My port trim however does not. All I hear is a clicking sound when...

    VHF Antenna Replacement

I have discovered I need to replace a 15 year old broken VHF radio antenna. The current one I have is a 8' Shakespeare 5206-N. Should I just replace it with the same one, or are there better ones now available? Thanks

Mercury Warranty Promotion / USA Only!?!?

As some of you may recall, I repowered our 31' Chaparral with two new Mercruiser Mag 357 engines. http://www.mercurymarine.com/repower/mercruiser/remanufactured-mercruiser-products/plus-series/357-mag-bravo-4v/ My 1 year factory warranty is nearly up, and I recently looked into buying a 2...

    Drive Gear Ratio

I'm trying to find out the gear ratio on a 2000 Volvo Penta SX drive. It came from a Larson Cabrio 254 with a 5.7 in it. The drive itself is locked up solid, and the tag with the serial # is no longer legible at all. Any ideas how to find out? I am thinking it is 1.5 to 1, but not sure. Thanks

    HELP! Insurance Problem

Last week while vacationing on Lake Vernon in Huntsville Ont, we had an unfortunate accident with our 20' Mariah. With 4 people in the boat, and a water skier in tow at about 20 MPH, we hit something in the water below the surface. We heard and felt a big thud under the boat. The engine kept...

How Fast is Too Fast? / VERY Lucky!

Perhaps there should be a speed limit on the water? These two people [father and son] are lucky to be alive! http://news.sympatico.ctv.ca/home/quick_work_by_doctors_saves_boat_crash_victim/48fa7606

    Tachometer / Ignition Problem

The tachometer on my starboard engine is suddenly acting up. All of a sudden it will not go above 3200 RPM, and yet below that RPM it functions as it should. It?s like there is some kind of mechanical problem with it preventing the needle from moving past 3200. I know for fact the engine is...

    More HP / Changing Pitch

I recently upgraded our new to us twin screw 31' Chaparral, with two 325 HP Merc 5.7s from the original 260 hp engines. http://www.mercurymarine.com/_media/pdfs/productbrochures/899883260_357MagBrvo4V_SS.pdf I only have about 3 hours on the new engines, and have not gone anywhere near WOT yet...

    Boat Explosion

This may or may not be the right place to post this, but it is an important reminder to all of us who work on our own boats, and even professional boat mechanics. One can NEVER be too careful when working on a boat, ESPECIALLY around the fuel system!:eek...

    Trim Pump Issues

1995 Merc Bravo 2, 5.7. On one of my drives, I can only get the drive to go up if I remove the "down" hose from the pump itself. Fluid flows freely out of the down line then as the drive goes up. If I leave the down line attached, the pump really seems to bog down, almost like a hydraulic lock...

    Twin I/O Alignment

I'm wondering about the I/O alignment on my twin screw boat. When the steering wheel is in the straight forward position, both drives look like they are not quite straight. The port one looks as though it is steering to the right just a bit, and the starboard one looks as though it is to the...

    1995 Bravo 2 Water Hose

So, I'm in the middle of changing out all of the bellows, trim senders, lower shift cable, and the water hose that runs from the gimble housing to the bell housing, on both engines of my boat. I have all the bellows removed, and am trying to access the screw in insert that holds the hose in...

    Perma Lube Gimbal Bearing?!?!

I just opened up two new merc Bravo transom kits [kit # 30-803100T1] to have a look at everything. Much to my surprise... both gimbal bearings are a "perma lube" bearing, with no hole in the outer race so it can be greased. In addition, the kit came with instructions and a plug to thread...

    Anode Question

This might seem like a dumb question, and probably is, but here goes anyway.;) In the merc anode kits I bought, there are serrated washers included with the new fasteners. Do these washers go directly under the head of the bolt, or between the anode and the drive itself, to help ensure a good...

    Re-painting Merc Outdrives

After doing plenty of research, and talking with several companies about their paint products, I decided it was time to refinish my outdrives. The paint was coming off in several areas, and it was time to do them before they suffered any corrosion damage. The first step was to get them media...

    Coupler Runout

How much runout is acceptable on a Bravo coupler? Today I was double checking the alignment I had done last week after running up the new engines I bought. When I went to stick the bar in, it was tight going in, with grease marks just on top. I got my wife to bump the starter, 90, 180 and 270...

    Engine Alignment / Adjustment

Need a bit of advice guys. Ok, so I'm installing two new Mercruiser 5.7 357 Magnums, in a twin screw Chaparral. The starboard side engine went well, and had no issues getting it to align properly. The port engine seems to be a different matter. The alignment bar only goes into the coupler...
