Best way to repaint the gimble ring assembly?

Is it advisable to remove this gimble ring assembly to clean/strip to repaint, or is that just a can of worms that is not worth the potential problems? Fresh water boat.

    Which prop to buy?

I have a new to me 1998 SeaRay 290 DA with twin 5.7 EFI/ Alpha drives, 1.47 ratio. Original Vengeance 14x19 3 blade SS props need to be replace due to damage. I'm wondering if 20 years after original Mfg chose these props, if there isn't a better choice out there? I would prefer to use...

    Now I'ive done it

As some of you may know, I've been disassembling my two Alpha 1 Gen 2 drives with the intent of cleaning them up and repainting them this winter, Got everything apart, only problem left is the brass nut that is seated in the bell housing for the shift cable. I cut the cable down enough to fit a...

    Thrust washer wear

Alpha1 gen 2 Took both drives off, one of the thrust washers has significant wear on the back side, the other has none. Is this an indication of something bad?

This seems very odd to me

Dealing with my first drive removal, strip down and repaint. 1998 Alpha 1 Gen 2 I can't figure out why there is a clip on the end of the bellows (see pic) I assume its to provide an electrical contact from the bell housing, through the wire in the bellows. It seems to me that this clip will...

What size bolt head is this?

Trying to get this zinc off and cant get to the bolt holding it on. I can't believe I am even having to ask this as I've done this before a few years ago on a similar drive. I have tried both deepwell 7/16 and 1/2".....9/16 wont fit down the hole. What am I missing?

    Are these U joints toast?

Found water inside the U joint bellows when taking off this Alpha 1 gen 2 drive. Appears to be only surface rust on the joints as they seem to function well but this is the first time I've gone this deep into a drive.

Any suggestions on how to get this bolt out

Top of a1998 Alpha1 gen 2 drive. I have been able to get it about 1/4 way out but it feels like it is going to sheer off if I give it anymore leverage. I have shot it with some PB blaster several times, screwed it back in a few turns then back out, even heated the housing around the bolt with...

Water in gimbal bellow, now what?

Pulled both drives off and found water in both gimbal bellows, which I was surprised about as the bellows themselves look almost new. I am trying to take off the bell housing so I can have the drives and housing stripped and painted this winter. I have successfully removed the hitch pin bolts...

    Are these an automatic replace?

Just bought a 1998 Sea Ray 290 Sundancer Everything except the out drives and props are in amazing like new condition. This was supposedly a freshwater all its life boat, but looking at the drives, I wonder. I have ordered an alignment tool and plan to pull the drives as soon as it arrives to...

    Neither out drive lowering

Just bought a new to me 1998 290 sundancer with twin 350 EFI/ Alpha drives I read an earlier thread that sometimes when the end caps get bad the drives can stick at the top, and they are defiantly at the very top right now. Funny thing is I don't even hear the pump doing anything. It has a...

How concerned would you be to buy a boat after being told this?

Looking at a 1995 34' Chris Craft Crowne cruiser with twin carbed 350 SBC with V drives. Seller claims he has owned the boat for last 20 years and has never replaced anything major on the engines (manifolds, risers, starters, water pump, fuel pump etc) or drives. Great lakes fresh water all...

Found this was just vinyl taped while cleaning the engine up

Plastic 90 degree elbow that comes off the side of the air cleaner/flame arrester cracked. Can this small part be easily replaced or is it part of an assembly. I couldn't find the area of the website were you enter the engine number and it provides exploded views. OL035657 1999 454 Mag MPI...

    Suggestions welcomed

I have a 2001 Stingray center console (MS200) with a 4.3 Mercruiser and alpha drive. I am looking for a way to get my trolling speed down and trying to get rid of dragging drift bags if possible. Online specs say boat weighs about 3000#. It has a fresh remaned long block. Current prop is a...

Using the paperclip to get motor RPM down for trolling

If memory serves correct, last year someone on this awesome site walked me through the process of using a half paperclip plugged into the wiring harness to get my 4.3 Merc to idle at a lower than normal RPM for setting the base timing. Can this be done while out on the water for purposes of...

Cause of Oil Filter system clog?

1999 Mercruiser 454 mag MPI with typical oil filter mounted upside down up high on the forward port side. Went to change the oil and filter yesterday and was greeted with a big mess as most of the contents of the filter was not pre-drained as usual. My previous experience with these systems is...

    Alpha losing gear oil

2001 Stingray MS200 4.3L, Alpha 1 Been out with boat several times now since getting a new engine and have had to add gear oil to the reserve tank at the front of the engine after each run. I figured that some air needed to be worked out of the line and it is somewhat normal for an engine swap...
