    Any Starcraft Tuna Fishers

I am toying with the idea of going tuna fishing next summer. However it is a 25-30 mile run each way, plus you fish at 2-7 mph (burn a significant amount of fuel). I got the safety gear except the epirb and lift raft. I only hold 36 gal. of fuel, so I would need to bring an extra 20 gallons...

    Another great season

Well the old star craft hauled some fish in this summer. 24 salmon, about 75+ sea bass, and probably around 2 dozen ling cod and 1 small halibut. The boat ran good all summer put 50+ hrs on it. That $4.80 gallon gas was painful. I got a new top end speed of 30+ since I switched to a 3 blade...

to change the water impeller or not

I know this is more of a motor question, but it seems like for some questions you get no practical responses, just change the impeller every year, or every 2 or 3 years. I know you starcraft guys are more practical. How long do you guys let your water pump impellers run for years/estimated...

what to build a motor housing (doghouse) out of ????

The motor housing on my 1986 Cheiftain has seen better days. The bottom is starting to rot, all the staples that hold the insulation for sound deadening are rusty. Right now the housing is made of 3/4 plywood, and I painted it white. I would like to build it out of something maintenance...

Any one else run their boat in salt water, issues???

Well my 86 Cheif looked like a fresh water only boat when I bought her 6 years ago. After about 3 months of use at the coast over the past 6 years it is sure starting to show issues. It seems like starcraft built these boats from fresh water only. Decided to modify the railing to create some...

I might have to fish in a fiberglass boat

Hope you guys don't hold this against me, but it looks like I have a very good chance of getting invited to go fishing on a 30' gradywhite with twin 225 hp 4 stroke outboards. I bet this thing will ride like a dream, I hope so because 100+ miles in a boat in one day is going to be along ride...

    18' I/O with a 350 v-8

Was searching my local craigs List (bend, OR) and found a 18' starcraft with a 350 v-8. They want too much $$$ but I bet that thing would fly, maybe 50+ mph with the right prop. I assume they put that motor in the boat and it did not come that way from the factory.

Any one else have an issue with wear on the heads of the rivits

I have a 21' Cheiftain, trailer has bunks with regular trailer bunk carpet. The way the trailer is built it has two bunks at the very back to support the back of the boat. The second set of bunks support the middle to the front of the boat. When loading/unloading the boat the boat slides on...

All downriggers users I need some advise

I think all us of starcraft guys are on budgets and none of us on an unlimited one. So I need some advise for those who have downriggers. I have a pair of walker, manual, with swivel bases. Purchased 6 yrs ago and one started malfunctioning on my last fishing trip. I might be able to fix, but...

engine coupler ?, can it be a momentary problem

Today had an issue when I accelerated the boat, came up to about 2,000 rms then reved slightly, I immediatly backed off on the throttle. I tried again and it did the same thing, headed for home at an idle. Figured engine coupler spun in the rubber housing and did not want to loose all power to...

what has been your experience with the pro-pulse adjustable props. the reason I ask is I current have one on my 140hp merc. I/O, 21 foot cuddy cabin starcraft boat, 4400rpms=30 mph. I ran across a thread where another guy lost all 4 blades and over rev. engine and damaged the outdrive. Have...

Surge Brake ?, should it skid the tires backing up

My question is shouldn't I beable to skid my tires when I try and back up a hill without using the reverse solinoid? The reason I ask is because I just installed 10" disc brakes (4600lb trailer/boat) and used the 600lb/6,000lb surge unit. Max 600lb hitch weight, max 6,000 lb trailer. Bleed the...

    Kodiak Oil Lube hub failures

Installed 4 Kodiak oil lube hub kits. Seals leaked oil in 100 miles. Fortunately I had wheel bearing grease, grease gun, and my axles where center drilled for grease fittings. So I pumped the wheel bearing full of grease and was back on the road. I do not believe I damaged the seals during...

First Starcraft Outing of the Year and the Results are

    1. no pictures forgot the camera at home. 2. My new kodiak disc brakes/new surge actuator did not release the brakes and held slight pressure so in 30 miles I was spewing hot oil out of the hubs. Disconnected brakes, pumped wheel bearings full of grease (axles are center tapped with grease...

how long keep fish on ice?

I am wondering just how long you can keep fresh caught fish on ice. Salmon, halibut, sea bass. all the fish are bleed right away. I catch them, keep them in a cooler with water for 1-6 hrs while fishing. Water temp is around 50deg. ocean water I pump in/out of the cooler. I get them back to...

    exhaust/intake manifold ? 3.0 merc (gm)

Since on a 3.0 manifold it is the intake and exhaust. When the manifold or elbow goes bad from corrosion does it normally fail so the water drains into the engine? Or do they normally fail with an external leak first? Is there anyway to determine when an elbow or manifold is near the end of...

    26' cheif on E-bay

I search e-bay and lunch today for starcraft and ran across a 26' Cheiftain, looks pretty good, but had the dreaded 470 motor. I think it was for $1800. It was I believe in the mid-west, way to far from Oregon for me. 1983 and is located in MI.

    3.0 head compatibility between 1971 and 2008

Before I sell all the good parts off my 1971 gm 3.0 (bad block) I was wondering if the heads are interchangable between a 1971 gm 3.0 and a 2008 3.0. I bought a new 3.0 crate engine to replace the old 3.0. I know the exhaust ports are different. New one has small ports old one has large ports...

some of you may remember my winter project was new axles, springs and disc brakes. Well that all seemed to go well but this weekend I took the trailer for 5 mile test pull and found metal in my new oil lube hubs. What it was from was the Kodiak oil lube hub kits. The alum hub hit the washer...
