Does anybody have an tips for fitting the water hose to the gimbal housing? I am using a heat gun to make it bit more flexible, and I've shoved a socket in it to widen it and going to leave it overnight. Hoping the second attempt would go easier, but it's just so stubborn to get on.

Whelp, I just failed the critical step in the bellows repair job. I failed to get the u-joint bellows properly secured to the gimbal housing. I now have a gimbal housing and one end of a bellow caked with hardened bellows adhesive. Is it possible to clean the bellow with mineral spirits and...

Sounds good, for some reason I thought this part was more expensive than I thought it was, not too bad.

Thanks! I think I am going to thread the needle. The replacement seals seem to have a larger hole, so I think I want to keep my seal and I will trim off the slight tear. But the fact that it is now crooked will eat at me, so I am going to get it back into position. Thanks again all.

Since I am planning to use a grease sealed gimbal bearing, would you still replace this? or just pound it back into position? This looks to be part quicksilver 88416

Removed the gimbal bearing, and it looks like there is a shim or seal behind the gimbal bearing that looks crooked. My guess is the slide hammer momentarily hooked it. Looks like the seal is slightly ripped too. What is this, is this part of the gimbal bearing that came apart during...

Assuming since the bell housing appears to be a powder coated baked finish, Will I be OK to use a standard degreaser (e.g. purple power) to get it cleaned up? (I know I'll use paint thinner and some stainless steel brushes to prep the collars for the bellows adhesive)

Good progress made yesterday, got the Bell Housing separated. The uni bellow was far easier to separate than the exhaust and throttle bellows, so further evidence it was compromised. And holy smokes, getting that water hose off was a bugger, but I didn't damage the water tube! Moving onto to...

So I am about to start this gimbal bearing and bellows project, I am going to also replace the shift cable and shift shaft bushing while I am at it. I just received my engine alignment tool, and wow! Thank you all for prompting me to check the gimbal bearing, boy is it shot! The noise the old...

Thanks that looks to work nicely, quick question I think my intermediate shift might have gotten turned around while working the uni job. When I lock the lower into forward gear, and then place the upper onto the lower, I'm guessing the shaft should be in roughly the 11 oclock position, correct?

Mercruiser Alpha 1 Gen 1 Project

Sounds good, after some more checking Quicksilver coats their bellows in critter poison, I'm guessing that is an easy shortcut these knock offs take among other quality concerns. Thanks all, will be definitely looking for oem parts for the bellows/gimbal job. So, the uni job is done as well as...

Is the Sierra kit of similar poor quality too?

Mercruiser Alpha 1 Gen 1 Project

So, looking up parts for this gimbal/bellows repair. Both Mercury (803097T1) and Sierra (18-8213) have these kits. Looking at a couple sites and the QuickSilver is ~$250, the Sierra can be had for about $150, but I am seeing clones on E-Bay and Amazon for as low at $60. I know you get what...

Thanks, this is different than the shift bellows the shift assembly runs through, the seal depicted as part #4, correct?

No smell! I'll take that as a good sign, and just focus on a gimbal bearing and bellows job.

Mercruiser Alpha 1 Gen 1 Project

Gotchya, so definitely replace the gimbal bearing. I took another look at the exhaust bellows and I do see some small cracking, I can't quite get a good look at the u-joint bellow since the housing is still attached, but I would assume it has to be in a similar condition as the exhaust bellows...

If its water mixed in with grease, so that sounds like gimbal bearing and bellows. Pressure test to check seals?

From what I could tell, it looked OK. I reached inside and felt, and the circumference felt smooth. The bellows all feel soft, no cracks that I could see. Here is a picture, although I am not sure how much that means, its got a ton of grease in there. Should I be cleaning out all the grease...

    Fuel pressure dropping.

I know your setup probably isn't like this, but this sounds eerily similar when you forget to vent your gas tank, but you mentioned the vent line.
