    Question regarding prop shaft

I think the rear of the shaft is chrome plated. It's the only thing to explain the lack of rust.

    Question regarding prop shaft

1984 OMC 4L sterndrive rebuild Newbie question, I have removed the prop shaft assembly from the lower gear case, and I can see how water is kept out of the gear case by a series of O rings and cup seals. Since this came to me almost totally disassembled, I loosely place all the components on...

Neede help identifying OMC stern drive

I like the idea of having an original hard copy manual, and there are a few for sale on ebay, but they are part #507551, and dated 1985, which I think would be for the 800 stringer. Would this book work for a 1984 400 stringer?

Neede help identifying OMC stern drive

OK I figured it out from the parts drawing, the shift rod screws into it, and that was what stopped it coming out. Thanks for the link, I will have to get a manual to re-assemble and set it up, taking stuff apart is always the easy bit.

Neede help identifying OMC stern drive

What is the best book to get to assist rebuilding a 400? And while I'm waiting for one to arrive, can anyone tell me what is involved in removing the prop shaft. It came to me with most of the internals removed, and although it will slide out a little, it will not pull right out. Is anything...

Neede help identifying OMC stern drive

Time for my first apology. Turns out Southkogs is right about the model numbers. The one on the engine rocker cover, (302STHRCRA), which I originally took to be the engine number, is correct for the sterndrive too. I found the correct parts drawing on the marineengine.com website under that...

Neede help identifying OMC stern drive

Well, lots of good info here, thanks to everyone. The engine is free, floor has no obvious soft spots, and the stringers the engine is mounted to look solid, although being covered in fibre glass, I can't see what's going on underneath. All things considered, and having a little mechanical...

Neede help identifying OMC stern drive

I believe they are model numbers. 983486 is on a plate attached to my outdrive, and the other is on the plate of one I have seen for sale. The ball gear turns clockwise only, (stiffly) and not anti clock, is that normal?

Neede help identifying OMC stern drive

I just bought a 1984 Tempest 4cyl with a model 983486 stern drive which came to me in pieces due to a seizure. Not sure I want to tackle that, since I have zero experience. I plan on searching for a used replacement, and may have a line on one, a model 982740, which I think is the previous...

OK. All good stuff. Thanks to all.

    shallow launch

I'm thinking of buying a small, older boat to use at a relatives cottage, probably 16-18 feet. His launch is quite shallow, around 24"-34", depending on how far he backs the trailer in. Which type of motor is best for this kind of situation, inboard or outboard, or is there no advantage, would...

Help, how heavy is my boat?

I have a 1982 Larsen fibre glass, 17 feet long, with an aproximate beam of 79", and fitted with a Mercruiser 470 inboard, (yes, I know). I need to know the total weight of the boat in order to source a boat lift, but Larson can't help me, using the number on the transome plate. I found Larson...

    470 Mercruiser, high oil pressure

I just finished an engine rebuild on a 1982 Mercruiser 470, including bearings, a new Melling oil pump, and a mechanical oil guage. Everythings running fine out on the lake, but I noticed I am getting 75lbs oil pressure at 2500rpm. (it drops at lower revs). Does this sound too high, and should...

Mercruiser 470 - Oil Baffles In Pan?

I rebuilt the engine on my 1982 470 last year, and ran it in gently, but it gave up a rod bearing last week, due I am told, to a lack of oil, and I'm in the process of rebuilding it again. I'm keen to avoid having to do this a third time, and a contact has suggested that the absence of oil...

    1982 470 developed engine knock

I have been using this 470 all of last summer, and for the first month of this year, and it has been starting and running fine. I have never had to take it over 3500rpm, but when I tried last week, the engine "bogged down". I re-set the timing, and took it out again, and had no trouble reaching...

    470 3.7 ignition timing

When I rebuilt my 3.7 Mercruiser, I timed it manually at 4 degrees BTDC. In the water the engine was missing, so I connected a timing light and saw it was several degrees in advance, (2" off the marks on the rotor) I retarded it, and this fixed the missing problem, but since the distributor has...

advice on running in a rebuilt engine

I'm finally ready to put my 470 mercruiser in the water after a rebuild including rebore, pistons, rod and mains bearings, head job etc. Can anyone offer instructions or point me to a link that will help me run it in?

    470 MerCruiser alignment question

I have successfully completed the alignment on my 80-82 470 engine using the tool described in many posts, but I am a little worried about the dimension where the tool passes through the gimbal bearing. It measures 1.375" at this point, but seems a fairly loose fit as it sits in the gimbal...

    Alignment question - rear mounts

From perusing previous posts on this subject, I know I'm not alone in being totally confused by the rear mount arrangement on my 470 Mercruiser. I want to resolve this issue prior to doing an alignment. I have all required parts in their correct place, including fibre washers and double helix...
