1996 BF50 Honda Bogging out when trying to plane

The more i think about it…it was doing this somewhat with the flywheel banging when i first got it. My theory was that the magnets hitting the coils hundreds of times a minute would heat them up due to friction and performance would break down. When i replaced the flywheel everything was great...

1996 BF50 Honda Bogging out when trying to plane

yeah i know they aren’t shockingly bad…adding any choke made it worse and pumping the ball has no effect. Low speed performance got worse and worse the warmer it got..sputtered back to the dock. But even a cold motor at the start of the day wouldn’t plane when low end still felt great. A few...

1996 BF50 Honda Bogging out when trying to plane

matt i cleaned the carbs spotless all new gaskets and orings. felt really smooth out but still bogging today and won’t plane. feathered it and got sooo close. i really don’t think it can be carbs at this point i flushed the small passages like crazy and used compressed air. My only thoughts...

1996 BF50 Honda Bogging out when trying to plane

So i did my carbs a few months ago and the boat ran great for 3 outings. It was giving a sputter at trolling speed every minute or so and I turned the fuel screw to 2 turns out and it went away (suspect it was a lean sputter?). Today after trolling around the creeks for a few hours it started...

    Honda 50 Ticking/Whirly Sound

I think corrosion forms under the magnets and just pushes them out ever so slightly causing interference. The new flywheel number is a revision so I’m guessing they changed with material or process to address the corrosion issue. The tricky part was after 30-40 minutes it def did cause slight...

    Honda 50 Ticking/Whirly Sound

So I put the new flywheel on and it’s super quiet and the slight misfiring after running awhile is gone!!! Get a new flywheel. I see guys running them with the hitting -this WILL affect running!!! You can’t have thousands of strikes a minute with no consequence. Shop around and find a new one...

    Honda BF50a milky oil…did I buy a bad motor

Ok guys getting ready to test the motor with the new flywheel but saw some oil on the midsection…what do you think? Oil pan gasket? I’ll have to remove the cowling to see exactly where. I’m praying it’s residual from my oil service and valve job/cover removal…but I doubt it. Noah

    Honda BF50a milky oil…did I buy a bad motor

Good stuff guys…my tach is kind of unstable so for idle and WOT/prop testing I read on other threads that the output RPM from these is unstable and to get this attached Honda resistor part-

    Honda BF50a milky oil…did I buy a bad motor

Matt it has the normal A/F screws…manual said 2 1/8 but I found the idle to strengthen a little richer at like 1 1/2. About where do you have your screws set? Thanks

    Honda BF50a milky oil…did I buy a bad motor

This is great!!! Saved 250$ worth of tools I I will never use more than once or so. Can’t thank you enough for all your input. I will check the choke operation…I know Manual works but was trying the switch up front today it’s possible it wasn’t working…nervous to take this boat out...

    Honda BF50a milky oil…did I buy a bad motor

I can’t thank you enough! Would I still need the end nut wrench to properly torque the new nut after threads are clean? Also I installed the flywheel just now and it’s quiet!!! OMG it was so loud when I got it…between the tensioner screaming and the loud pinging…NOW it’s perfect. Will test...

    Honda BF50a milky oil…did I buy a bad motor

Ok guys…ordered the flywheel and it was here in 24hrs from Jacksonvile from boats.net. Good to know that I can get stuff quick here on the Georgia coast. This will at least fix the noise and magnet clearance issue. I really think the magnets hitting at 1000’s of times a minute would surely...

    Honda BF50a milky oil…did I buy a bad motor

So in your opinion there’s no way a missing themostat could sweat/condensate the cylinders over long periods of idling in cooler water?

    Honda BF50a milky oil…did I buy a bad motor

Captain Ahicks I really appreciate all your responses to my various issues with this recent 15 dauntless I purchased with this 1997 BF50 (~1076 hrs). Let me give you an update. I did a complete carb rebuild/sync, valve adjustment, checked timing, new belt/tensioner, plugs, thermostat, water...

    Honda 50 Ticking/Whirly Sound

I’ve already been under there and tried to lightly file the corner of the pickup…didn’t work. These pics are what I found before I did anything. It’s def a loud metallic pinging at flywheel speed…wouldn’t you say it’s hitting?

    Honda 50 Ticking/Whirly Sound

Honestly…sounds like I need to just order a new flywheel. A used one on eBay would likely have the same issue. This sucks…already spent 500$ on parts going thru this motor. I’ve read about 10 posts and I’m sure it’s the flywheel. With no way to repair like other brands…it’s just going to get...

    Honda 50 Ticking/Whirly Sound

It’s a motor I just bought that had been sitting. It’s def coming from up front under the flywheel. I’m thinking it’s hitting and that I need to look harder at the contact. Going to color everything with a sharpie and see what is revealed.
