    1973 Mercury 115 2 stroke engine questions

Well the key is toast. I did a compression check on 5 of the cylinders, bottom one is too hard to get to. The range is from about 90 to 98. That's on a cold, dry engine that's been sitting for years. Is that within an acceptable range? I did not check for spark because of the key and I'll use...

    1973 Mercury 115 2 stroke engine questions

I'll start work on it in a couple days. The key cylinder is destroyed, looks like a screw driver was used to turn the switch. I tried that and got nothing at the motor. I haven't checked the switch wiring. I'll replace with a new switch. I can jump the solenoid and get the starter to spin. So at...

    1973 Mercury 115 2 stroke engine questions

Hi, I bought a 1973 complete boat with the 115 HP engine and trailer for $500. No idea if the engine is good, but hope so. I was told it's good. The key is missing so I can't really test it right now. I want to remove the engine and tilt/trim to put on my bass boat. First question is: The...

Found them through pine lake parts. Always great to talk to those folks. Its Sierra # 18-0855 and Chrysler 85159 F85159 Intake Manifold Gasket After this, I'll need to replace the prop shaft seals. Looks like the Exxon Valdez came through here.

1972 Chrysler 85, Tolletson carburetor tuning

I timed it a #1 30 degrees, WOT and the distributer is aligned properly. All my experience with engines is with cars, but I was thinking a vacuum leak also. Just took a closer look and I can see silicon on the intake mating surfaces. I'll need to replace those gaskets. I'll do some Google...

1972 Chrysler 85, Tolletson carburetor tuning

Well, I timed it to 30 degrees, set the carbs to one and a half turn out and it won't start and idle. It really wants to but not happening. Before at timing to 36, it would idle, but of course it ran very poorly. I'm wondering if there's something else I need to look at? Thanks again.

I'm going to start with the sticker. I was trying to follow the video by Frank Acampora, but I think I don't know enough to be able to fully understand what's going on. Trying to learn and not get too frustrated. I appreciate the help! Thanks.

1972 Chrysler 85, Tolletson carburetor tuning

I have a 1972 Chrysler 85HP, 857HDoutboard with Tolletson WB9B carbs. I rebuilt the carbs last year, got it running and put it away. I'm starting on it again now. I've been chasing my tail for a couple of days trying to get it to run right. I think I need to first set the timing. I have a...

1972 Chrysler 85, Tolletson carburetor tuning

Hi, I have a 1972 Chrysler outboard 857HD. It's a 2 stroke, I rebuilt the carbs last year and then put the boat away. I'm getting back to it now. The problem I'm having is there is a lot of blue smoke in gear and idle. I don't see a fuel mix screw adjustment. Am I missing it? If there isn't one...

Doing some research on adding tilt trim

I'm going with used parts also. Part of the problem is I'm in northern NM and boat salvage yards are hard to come by in the desert. But it's a project boat, in overall great condition and a great running motor, only thing missing is the t&t. And I bought it for a grand. So I don't mind spending...

Doing some research on adding tilt trim

I have a hoist and I've pulled a dozen engines from vehicles, so this 200 pound engine is no big deal. The new T&T is suppose to take the place of the old transom mount, hence the need to remove the old mount. I'm out of town for a week and I'll look into it when I get back. And do some reading...

Doing some research on adding tilt trim

Did some looking around. I realize I should have done that to begin with. I think this cap is what's holding the pin in place? Can I get a confirmation on that?

Doing some research on adding tilt trim

Hi, I have a 1972 Chrysler, 2 stroke, 85hp. This motor never came with a tilt trim, but I would like to add one. Has anyone done this here. What tilt trim unit would I use and on a side note, how do I get the the transom mount kingpin out of my motor? Thanks again.

1972 Tillotson WB9B carburetor fuel bowl leak

To wrap this up. All the floats were way out of adjustment and are now all within specs. This was not the cause of the leak. For the leak, I got some bowl gaskets on the way, but on a suggestion from someone at Pine Lake Parts out of MI, I took off the carb bowl and noticed that the bottom part...

1972 Tillotson WB9B carburetor fuel bowl leak

Hi, I just got a project boat. It's got a 1972 Chrysler 85HP 2 stroke. I rebuilt the carbs and I'm in the process of tuning them. Problem is that one of the carbs has a leak from where the fuel bowl seats against the carb housing. This is a preexisting issue and not related to my rebuild. The...
