Still chasing hard warm starting, 7.4 carbed

It’s a steel line. Looks like the original pump, but It’s a mechanical fuel pump so I’m not sure how they continue to pump when shut down?

Still chasing hard warm starting, 7.4 carbed

1995 7.4, carbed. New block and bottom ends, 30ish hrs. Last season I battled hard start/no start when hot. Engine would crank but not fire after warming up. The boat was new to me, so I hadn’t figured it all out yet, but my old boat with a 350 would start with a bump of the key every time. I...

    12v access to "remote" batteries

My boat has a dual battery setup under the hood (engine compartment), and the hood has a power ram system. My biggest fear is that if for whatever reason I have dead batteries, I wont have access to boost. The risk is low, as I have a battery switch under my rear seat wich is manully accessible...

    Identifying 1976 Engine-is it a 302 or a 351?

Nice! Sounds like Priest is where most of them lived. Mine was orange and white. I'm up in Canada (BC) and there are quite a few around, and I used to run mine on the Montana side of Koocanusa and would see the odd one there too. I sold mine this past spring and immediately regretted it, as they...

    Identifying 1976 Engine-is it a 302 or a 351?

Is this boat a red/white/blue American? I’ve seen a few of your posts and from what I’ve read, it sounds like one I looked at about 8 years ago. I used to own a ‘78, they are great boats.

    Mercruiser Engine serial numbers

Thanks for all this. The tag does look a little beat up. There’s certainly evidence that the motor was pulled and reinstalled. I’ll try and get a pic. Shop that did it is legit, but it def has sent me for a brain spin as I didn’t expect to see it on the block of this swapped motor

    Mercruiser Engine serial numbers

Thanks for that. More just curious as I was told the motor was cracked and replaced but after changing plug wires last night I noticed that the serial number plate on the block matches the one on the flame arrestor cover, which also has the matching drive and transom serial numbers. So either...

    Mercruiser Engine serial numbers

Are the engine serial numbers on on Mercruiser block tag and flame arrestor cover unique to the engine or are they the same for a range of the same engines? My engine serial number is 0F557755. It’s a gen V 7.4 block. Thanks in advance.

    Draining manifolds, 1995 7.4

Update on this: spoke to the tech who has worked on this boat since day one. Hadnt really come across it as they run the boats to fog before draining, but wasn’t concerned (atleast not as much as I was). Drain the block, circulating pump and the cooler, fill with antifreeze, and he will have a...

    Upgrading, or downgrading?

Best advice is to wait for the right one to come into reach instead of getting into something that your not 100% on. Where was that chap located?

    Upgrading, or downgrading?

I’ve always been told to always go more power than less if you can. Those Chap 226’s are great family boats, in-laws used to have one. Bonus if it has a V8, theirs had the 350 Mag and it it could pull a water skier/wakeboarder while fully loaded.

    Draining manifolds, 1995 7.4

Forgot to mention, it’s a fresh water, raw water cooled engine

    Draining manifolds, 1995 7.4

Hi all, I started winterizing the 7.4 in my ‘95 Cougar and I noticed there was almost no water that drained out of my exhaust manifolds. This boat/engine is new to me, and I’m used to draining tons of water out of my old pre-alpha 5.7 (log manifolds). I’ve stuck wires and screwdrivers up the...

    7.4/Bravo - no hot start

Hi all, Earlier this summer, my 95' Cougar was starting to refuse starting when warm. Its got a carbed 454/Bravo 1 drive. The block and bottom end are almost new, 25'ish hows (0.30 over with an upgraded cam, built and installed by reliable people). Anyways, it would fire right up every morning...

Accidentally grounded 12v power under dash

Had a friend come over with a multimeter and we did some poking around, full 12v to the coil and wasn't able to find anything else melted. Will replace the melted wire and keep on trucking, with a fire extinguisher on hand :)

Accidentally grounded 12v power under dash

Made an absolute bonehead move - a few weeks ago I pulled the tachometer to measure it, and for whatever reason, I threw all the wiring back in all the wrong spots. A couple nights ago, I turned on my batteries and went to hit my hood ram switch (located beside the tach), and it didnt work! So I...

    1995 7.4 Thunderbolt starting

Thanks for clarifying. And that actually makes a lot of sense - when I looked at the boat before buying, the previous owner couldn’t get it started and we figured it was flooded. He had ran it earlier that day on the muffs. I wonder if the carb is infact leaking…

    1998 5.7 srartup

My old carbed 5.7 would smoke like this for several minutes until the choke opened while warming up…. otherwise I never had issues.

    1995 7.4 Thunderbolt starting

Thanks, I did update my boat and included that its a carbed engine with a mechanical fuel pump system.

    1995 7.4 Thunderbolt starting

Hi all, I recently just changed boats and am getting accustomed to the 7.4/Bravo 1 with the Thunderbolt ignition system. The engine has 23 hours on it, as the shortblock was replaced a couple years ago by a very reputable marine shop (new engine is a 7.4 bored 0.030 over, with a non-stock cam...
