    I just replaced the rectifier on my 1972 100HP Evinrude 100293R. When I pull the battery cables off the engine while it's running it shuts off. I was told that this engine needs a battery to run though. Is there another way to tell if the engine is charging the battery?

    I was having a problem starting this engine today. After a few minutes of cranking I notice a good amount of oil surrounding the prop. Is this normal? At first I thought it was fuel/oil mixture but I think it's the lubrication for the low end.
