    Solid steering... OLD!

I have aquired an older boat... late 50's to early 60's. It has "Solid Steering" meaning a single cable not the pulley system. I have never owned this type and don't know how to care for it. There seems to be a grease fitting aft by the point where the cable ends... How do you maintain...

Don't want to break it! HELP!

I have a Really sweet 1957 35hp Lark with no spark... She has been sitting for 30 years! (Now... I have removed flywheels from 5.5's 7.5's, but never one this big...) A guy here, who I trust, is telling me to tap it on the nut while holding it off the ground, rather than using the puller...

    57' Lark Revival

This motor is not seized. I has been sitting for 30 years but periodically the rope was pulled. Now I want to revive it. Obvious stuf... I will replace the ignition parts, and plugs...probably plug wires too. I will remove the carb and replace the parts...(carb cleaner on the needles). As...

    1964 35 Evinrude LARK

Hello, I am going to look at a motor that has not run in MANY years. Maybe since the 70's. The Owner has kept it in his basement / Garage and routinely pulled the rope to make sure it did not sieze up. I obviously would be hesitant to try and start it... but, what do you recommend? Also, I...

    Big league now...

I never owned a motor bigger than a 10HP... Till today. Got a 1964 Big Twin on a 1960 Elgin Sportabout... It is electric start. That is also new to me. Question... When I ran it today... It started pretty easily But did not run well at lower speed. I never touched a CHOKE... Am I supposed to...

    Bad Idle...

1971 9.9 Model 94HB. Autolectric starts well with throttle in "start" position. Left alone... the vibration causes the throttle to move towards "shift" and "Slow".... It won't make it to the "shift" position before stalling. What do you recommend?

    Am I doing this right?

I removed the dust cap on a trailer I bought and the bearings had been neglected. There was a bit of water and not much grease left. No wonder they made a rubbing sound... I had never changed bearings so I could use some advice. I removed the wheel from the axle and pounded out the seats that...

    Crossing over...

As you can tell from my name, I was brought up on old Evinrudes. The other day, I saw this old 9.9 Chrysler Auotlectric with a light on the cover... and well, it was love at first sight. Now it is in my garage and I realize I am not in Kansas anymore. First, I am not really sure of the year...

    idle trouble

Took a 1959 5.5 Rude out yesterday... started well... high speed backed out 3/4 turn, low speed 1 1/2 turns.... After warm up, could not get any real power at open throttle or keep it running unless I had the high speed almost totally seated. Carb rebuild? any suggestions? When I had it...

    Stupid tax... boat leaking

Yesterday I pulled the boat out of the water... as usual, but did not see that the crew, (wife and kids) had not exited first! The resulting extra weight caused my keel to bend inward against the trailiers roller, at a point just under a bench seat (1953 Aerocraft 14'). I immediately noticed...

    Gas Leak!!!

OK... what is the deal? Is this normal? On my 1959, 5.5... I took it off to make some repairs to the transom. I gently set it down on a packing blanket. It was resting on two points, the prop and the cowl pan ( on the spark plug side)... Can you picture that? I started working on the...

    Drain Plug location...

I have an old 1953 Aluminum Aero-Craft. It is 14 foot. It has no drain plug. I was acustomed to having one on my old boat. Where is the smart place to place it? If in the transom... it would need to be about an inch off the bottom to avoid the seam... At that point I would be left with quite...

    shift rod trouble...

I replaced the lower unit on a 1957 18 HP. I could not get the shift likage connected again. As I raised it back up to bolt it together, I first slowly turned the drive shaft and got that inserted... then the copper tube... then I moved the shift lever towards reverse so that it captured the...

    ignition coil spec...

Does anyone know if the coils on the 55' Fleetwin 7.5 are compatable with the 1959 Fisherman 5.5? My 59's are shot and i have a spare set from the 55'... Anyone hae an idea if they will work?

    air leak?

Newly aquired '59 5.5 Fisherman. I used some suggested initial carb settings... 3/4 turn on low and 1 1/2 on high... The previous owner replaced the fuel line that runs from bottom to top cylinders on the left side (near gear lever) with clear yellow tubing. I see that there is air in it. I...

    1959 5.5 Fisherman

Ok... Just a few questions. I am new to this motor. I am more familiar with the 1955 Fleetwin. First. Setting the high and low carb settings. I took off the high adjustment knob. I seated it gently and then backed it out one and one half turns, then replaced the knob. As for the low speed...

    prop swap

I have a 1955 7.5 fleetwin with a three blade prop. I also have a 1959 5.5 fisherman with a two blade prop... Can the three blade be swapped with the two balde, to give a bit of boost to the 5.5? Thanks.

Knob settings on 1957 18hp rude

On my old 7.5 Fleetwin's the upper carb low speed setting starts at 1 1/2 turns left... the Large hih speed knob at 1 turn left... (I think) Are these true for the 18 fastwin as well? Thanks, Tom

    Tilt and splill....

Ok... I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer some times. When I have my pressure tank hooked up and tilt my motor forward (raising the prop up out of the test tank) gas will pour out. Is there a way to tilt these up without a spill? Do I need to to remove the gas line first? Or will it...
