    OMC 460 vacuum test/reading

Hey everyone, I have a '89 7.5 L OMC 460 with a 650 CFM holley carb. I just recently rebuilt the carb and was going to do my due diligence on tuning the carb/engine to the right settings. I've set dwell and have the timing where it needs to be. I was thinking of doing a vacuum test coming...

OMC 460 running rich at idle after higher rpm

Hey Scott. I rebuilt the carb and it was pretty simple like you said. All passages were clear and I followed a couple vids plus the manual to make sure I wasn't missing anything. I don't have the air horn numbers handy right now but I can find it. The list number was 50470 and its a 4160...

OMC 460 running rich at idle after higher rpm

Hey guys, sorry for the long write up. Let me know if you have any ideas. Thanks in advance. I have a '89 460 king cobra. Everything was completely rebuilt and she runs pretty damn good. The only issue we've been having is when we lower the speed/rpm coming off of plane. The engine seems...

    2nd wiped Camshaft OMC 460

Yes. Comp cams was pretty specific in their instructions on removing the inner springs during break in.

So I figured I'd post an update. Huge thanks to everyone who replied to this post. Yesterday my cousin and I dropped in our '89 460 back into our boat and started her up and we had a successful break in for 30 mins. Needless to say we were super nervous because we have been here before...

    2nd wiped Camshaft OMC 460

Now that I have everything apart. I want to make sure this block is as clean as I can get it before reassembling everything especially because there are metal particles in the oil. We had a magnet at the bottom of the pan and everything seemed to be almost microscopic. That being said, what...

Unfortunately I feel like I'm getting to know this engine way too well. Lol. Yes, lesson learned. I'll keep you updated once everything goes back together. Hopefully is a success.

This time I'll have the recommended springs and everything else for the cam. Fingers crossed that this does the trick

That is correct. We figured, hey we have it out, let's make sure everything is good on the inside. Made the mistake of not keeping the original lifters in order so we bought all brand new lifters and didn't do a proper break in with just the new lifters on the old cam. Then the problems...

Yeah I was thinking about that too. Any way to do that at home without paying a machine shop?

Well I bit the bullet and bought all new springs, rockers, retainers, and I'll get pushrods soon. I'm not getting replacement heads but I am taking them in to get a proper valve job. Guy is gonna have to machine the guides for the new springs. My worry is I still haven't 100% concluded what...

    2nd wiped Camshaft OMC 460

Did the test, and was able to watch the oil flow in real time. That problem bore was getting plenty of oil flow to it. So I'm pretty sure its get sufficient oil. I just hope the crank shaft is doing its job and splashing oil onto that particular lobe. (Not entirely sure thats how the lobes...

Yes, this time just going to replace the springs and rocker arms and push rods.

    2nd wiped Camshaft OMC 460

I'll give it a shot. I did remove the oil plugs and I can see all the way down the passage that feeds the lifter bores. And because cylinder 8 lifters are not having any issues I just figured that the flow is fine. Because the oil has to reach cylinder 7 bores before #8

    2nd wiped Camshaft OMC 460

Ok quick update. Just checked lifter bore clearances. The affected bore has .002" of clearance which still falls within specs according to the book. So maybe a quick hone of the lifter bore will help. I did however find that I'm getting dangerously close to coil bind when the lifters are all...

    2nd wiped Camshaft OMC 460

Just checked the seal to retainer clearance. There is plenty of space and no coil bind neither. I'm waiting on a scope to measure lifter bore clearance. I'm running out of possibilities of what went wrong. I did read a post on a 460 forum about how a guy said his positive seals did "too...

Just checked pushrod length. They fall within specs that the manuals gives after the clearance check.

So I just pulled part the motor last night. Oil passages are very clear. They look super clean and I can see from from the front where the oil galley plug is all the way to the back of the engine. Since the lifter affected is Cylinder 7 intake if there was some type of blockage that would...
