Poor engine compression, '55 Johnson 25HP

I have a '55 Johnson 25HP that I bought as a "parts motor" as the seller knew it had problems.
He said it ran "about 2 years ago" (who knows?) and that it lacked high speed power. He had the carb apart too and it needs new seals, gaskets.

So....I'm an auto tech but I'm...

Possible to know late 50s powerhead model info by serial#?

Sorry if overdone but I know that with old Mercs, one can know year and more by the serial #. From what I've seen so far, it's not so easy with Johnson/Evinrude in comparison with old stuff (late 50s).
I know that my outboard has a replacement powerhead but not sure as to exactly what...

    Mid 50s 25HP Johnson won't shift, "not attached".....ideas?

I'm looking at an ad for another vintage outboard where the seller's selling it as a "parts outboard" because he claims that it has a few problems and doesn't know anything about it, selling it "as is". The only thing that might be a big deal is that he says it doesn't shift, it's stuck in F now...

Do all Johnson outboards made after '59 definately have t-stats?

Someone mentioned that in my other thread but I'd like to be 100% sure before buying another, newer model outboard manual attempting to know what HP motor I now have. For example, if it's a newer (late 60s, early 70s) 20 or 25HP powerhead, then it'd have to have a t-stat right? Mine does not...

Johnson powerhead #s ('70ish), any way to know HP, 20 vs 25?

I have a restored '57 18HP Johnson where the seller who restored it says that he used a newer 25HP powerhead but at one point wasn't sure if it was perhaps a 20HP powerhead (the original 18HP powerhead had a bent crank so he replaced the complete unit). Thinks is a '69-'70 vintage unit.
...

Service manual, parts for early 50s Johnson 5.5 HP Sea Horse?

I havent yet found manuals, parts for that engine online so far and although it still runs fine, I'd like a service manual for it and any available parts info too if anyone here knows of any good sources.
Here's one that looks just like it on Ebay for $75 except that mine has a white...
