How much does a merc 1400 weigh?

I am doing an engine swap from a 1978 merc 1400 (L6) to a 1988 evinrude 120 (V4). Does anyone know how much either of these weigh? I don't want too much more stern weight and the evinrude looks a good bit bigger. They both fit a 21" transom. thanks

How do I entend shaft length for 21" transom?

I just bought a 1988 evinrude 120. It is a short shaft for an 18" transom and my boat has a 21" transom. How difficult (costly) is it to make this adjustment? I have seen extentions online....is this the ticket?

    Powerhead swap?

I am wondering if anyone knows whether the powerhead on a 78 merc 1400 (inline 6) is the same as the powerhead on 79 115. It looks like the displacement and bore are the same. The stroke is slightly different. Does this matter? I was the post for the "thumping sound of 78 merc 1400" and it...

Thumping in 1978 Merc 1400- VIDEO

My 1978 merc 1400 has been running great for a year since I bought it. I was running for the 3rd day in a row at 2/3 throttle and it was sounding good- suddenly I heard a dull thumping sound (rapid)...maybe some loss of power. I shut it off immediately and when I turn it over with the electric...

    Did I throw a rod?

I have a mercury 1400 (1978). It has been running beautifully with very few problems. I was running at 2/3 throttle today on the way home from trip and I suddenly heard a loud knocking or rattling coming from the engine. I think there was also a loss of power. I immediately powered down and...

Loud pop and stuttering engine in Mercruiser D-tronic 7.3L

Summary: I experienced a small explosion sound from the engine followed by a puff of very black exhaust. The engine then was stuttering a barely able to idle as though it wasn't running on all cyliders. The pop was preceded by a whining sound that that sounded like something overpressuring...

    Merc D-tronic 7.1 L can't get to high rpm

We ran out to the fishing grounds (30 miles) at about 15 knots and then trolled all day (14 hours). On the return leg we couldn't get the RPM's over about 1500 giving us a speed of 8 knots. It would run fine at 1500 but if we throttled forward, it would slowly surge forward then it would drop...

    Merc 1400 L6 (1978) Stator Test

I am still testing the engine to solve a high voltage problem- output of 17 volts. I went in to buy a voltage regulator- even though this model doesn't normally have one and the mechanic only produced a rectifier. The same one that I have and works fine. Now I am back to testing...thinking...

    Merc 1400 high voltage problem

OK I am stumped. I have read a lot of the other threads on this topic. Check it out: I have a 1978 Merc 1400 (I-6). Last week I was checking the voltage on the starter battery and saw that it read over 17 volts when we were running at a medium RPM. This was concerning, but everything ran...

merc 1400 L6 shift rod alignment

I replaced the water pump on a 1978 merc 1400 outboard. When I put the lower unit back on, I couldn't get the transom lock latch that is actuated by the shift rod to work properly. I am talking about the latch that grabs the tilt pin when you shift in reverse. I removed the unit a bunch of...

    Leaking Carburetor?

Each time I pull my merc 1400 (1978) forward out of the water it leaks a good bit of fuel. I noticed there is a built in tray below the carburetors that is designed to catch fuel spilling out. Is this leakage normal or does it indicate a problem...such as a stuck float switch or something?

    Premix vs Oil Injection

I recently purchased a boat with an old 1978 Mercury 1400. It requires a 50:1 mix of oil. I am wondering if anyone had thoughts on whether I can install an aftermarket oil mixer that will pull from a resevoir of oil and mix it before the engine. I understand that pre-mixing at 50:1 accomodates...
