    can of worms?

Hoping that everyone's been safe!! (Floridians Texans etc). Having a hole to work from really didn't help much cos I won't know until I chuck it up if it can be drilled in the press - might have to do it by hand; which is OK. Have some minor touch up (scars etc), but that's just about how...

    can of worms?

nothing much again; unless you consider lining that up on an uneven floor something - it is!! nailed it... just using the old bracket for alignment - it's tacked on as well as the rectangular tubing. Now that the two holes are drilled for the swivel bracket, I'll weld the others on and...

    can of worms?

this is the hole I drilled awhile back that made me scrub the direction I was going in. An 1-18th hole saw ended up 1-3/16" - unusable. Guessing, not really lol, I don't know enough about Morse taper  it's all good, never too old to learn... my press takes a different style taper, but...

    can of worms?

maybe I should've used a steel milk crate or a better block of wood? Looks like the micrometer moved while trying to balance the camera etc. I measured ten thousandths and that's showing closer to 15? (hard to tell in pic) Whatever!! sand that out after I finish welding... Just saying...

    can of worms?

closer, not yet... Swivel bracket off my 100, supposed to be identical, just checking for fit. Something moved cos the bar coming out of the bracket is high on that end, barely see it - it fits flush on the bottom, there's a piece welded in there. Bar for port side on top Probably notch the...

    can of worms?

nothing to brag about, if I make an exceptional weld, it was by accident!! lol Been welding so long it's like whatever.... Just showing how flat a fillet weld should be - one in and two over, aprx 8" long. The one thing I hate about this machine is that it doesn't have a way to set "post gas"...

    can of worms?

sitting on a bucket and thinking..... and wondering what have I gotten into? piece on top is one of the arms (not using, both are scrap). Cut up the plate I welded and made it to fit the beam. Drill/slot holes for plug welds - probably gouge beam to tie in to tubing directly...

    can of worms?

wow... starting to wonder how much more I can stand.... lol went back to the salvage yard to look at some other motors for ideas; plus I was feeling neglected  - they always give me a hard time, I'm known as the "electric shift guy" lol. Seems I'm about the only person still...

    can of worms?

took my old '72 100 off its stand and that's enough for Sunday - going to start building off of that stand and was wanting a visual reference. The 115 and 100 are identical in many respects - this one's only a part motor now. Probably need to finish removing a few things and send the rest down...

    can of worms?

this picture is how it was OMC design on a CMC t/t - side clamps against motor mount brackets with swivel bracket in between. Originally had the thought mount it all to the plate  lol, for reasons of twisting torque. Torque will be there regardless those clamps/brackets, am now...

    can of worms?

am curious too, this is the 3rd or 4th time I've changed from starting. But, think this is the final direction; it IS quite a bit of material - that I-beam is "light" but will be trimmed down later. Haven't weighed it yet, but doubt it will not be much heavier than a stock swivel bracket for...

    can of worms?

what I'm looking at now; hole saw made bigger than a 1-1/8" hole ='s more scrap!! Have a Morse taper shank coming Monday; it's 12" long - line bore it 8" I-beam split to eventually make the 7'5" spread needed - clearance and shims will determine final width. 5/8ths flat bar welded to flanges...

    can of worms?

a close up shot 3/64 wire (MIG) is not be as exacting as TIG duh; less than a 3" weld on 25.2V and 485ws - might could've stood a little more wire. Tiny bit of I.F., blend that out with burr bit. With any Aluminum MIG, you HAVE to be moving; with 3/64, you have to be flying!! More than...

    can of worms?

took ALL day to make that one piece; my neighbors will be glad when I'm done !! maybe more than me lol amusing, nah, am using 5/8's bar instead of 3/8" - that'll give me a 1/4" more hole, might taper the end? Won't be touching the steering arm regardless - bushing is only 1" long. But...

    can of worms?

can't have anyone thinking I'm goofing off; when did I start this thread  that's the worst end of the four on top, but weld will take care of that - took a little too much trying to make it start in the pipe easier. No joke, two days work making them fit..... All 8 corners are...

    can of worms?

went out to the scrapyard for some "real steel" and came back with this the pipe probably came off of a trawler of some kind - about broken on the end and looks like it's gouged from a cable rubbing. 3/16" wall, 2" OD and 2.5" on tips, and 8' long to the break. After welding with this Miller...

    can of worms?

welding tip - soak your wire in 50/50 Acetone/ATF for max penetration  nah, not much beats 3/64 wire for max penetration with ally MIG. Wire speed is where you get most of your penetration. This was only a very few passes with a 1/4" rock. both ends will be cut off/trimmed maybe...

    can of worms?

not even Photobucket could fix these welds  wasn't trying to make it pretty, guess I succeeded  Wouldn't even donate a high dollar toothbrush to clean it up  damn the torpedoes, went straight to welding without playing with it first. Might should have? will play some...

    can of worms?

OK, trying this route... just as well, everything leading up to this is in the past and I'm not looking back just sitting on top of strongbacks (that have to be welded first). And strongbacks sitting on top of rectangular tubing will be on top of plate - it all gets welded to keep plates from...

    other problems.....

How have you dealt with them? If it doesn't concern our boats, are there really any other? :) Of course there are.... Sadly enough, I'm discovering at this point in my life, my boat is about all that there is..... Depending upon how I "choose" to look at that, that could be good news or bad...
