Alpha 1 Gen 2 Drive Shaft Housing, Lower oil seal replacement?

Cheers, much appreciated. One more question, if I may? The seals seem to come in a set, for the entire drive shaft housing, so it would make sense to replace the top seal (on the input shaft) while I have it apart. Can I do this (looks like it requires disassembly of the shaft, with all its...

Alpha 1 Gen 2 Drive Shaft Housing, Lower oil seal replacement?

Cheers, I feared that might be the case. Is it a job I can do myself? I have no service tools, but have an idea that as long as Im not replacing any bearings, I can just remove the shafts and replace them? Please could you, or anyone else, give me a quick walk through of how to disassemble the...

Wires on trim posn sender frayed.

The wires leading to my trim position indicator (A1G2) are frayed. I’ve not removed the cover yet, but if I do, can I trim the wires and re attach them? There seems to be plenty of length of wire.

Alpha 1 Gen 2 Drive Shaft Housing, Lower oil seal replacement?

I’ve separated the grat. case from the drive shaft housing on my Alpha 1 Gen 2 outdrive, and the spring from the drive shaft housing lower oil seal has come out with the gear case input shaft. Can I replace this seal from the ‘outside’ or do I have to disassemble the entire drive shaft housing...

    Fogging with 10W30 oil

Thats what I always do, run the hot engine at a fast idle and pour 50ml or so of TCW3 2 stroke oil down the carb, till the exhaust smokes like they have elected a pope.

    Massive vibrations...then none

I had similar once, wasn't like engine vibration coming from misfiring, rather the whole boat was shuddering, and the prop was slipping, as if it was venting air (trim too high). Turned out it was a plastic sack wrapped round the prop.

3.0l Alpha 1 Gen 2 low speed overheat

Well, I don't think theres any sand still in the system (no power steering). It wasn't much in the first place really, as I just felt the boat dragging a bit on the sandy bottom, shut it down straight away and punted it into deeper water with a boat hook. The engine ran fine afterwards, with no...

3.0l Alpha 1 Gen 2 low speed overheat

Cheers. Yes I can motor round at 1200 rpm to get to the area of my slip, and I can chop the engine and coast in the last few feet, using a boat hook to pull the boat into position. Same coming out, I can position the boat in the lane, pointing the right way, start up and motor off (obvs not so...

3.0l Alpha 1 Gen 2 low speed overheat

Well I did suck up a bit of sand but that wasn't last year, it was the year before, but of course its going to bring the pump components that bit closer to the end of their life. I honestly don't know why I didn't change the damned thing when it was out of the water. I even grabbed a box from...

3.0l Alpha 1 Gen 2 low speed overheat

Well, as I said, I could have the boat craned out, but Id be looking at nearly 300USD. I know thats much cheaper than a replacement engine, but as I also say, Im not convinced that with a bit of careful handling it would come to that. It is weird. A few years ago I did an impeller replacement...

3.0l Alpha 1 Gen 2 low speed overheat

Cheers for the trailer advice; yes if I could get a simple trailer, Im sure it would be OK. Im confident theres no blockage. The boat was fine when it was winterised, and although theres very little water flow at 800rpm idle, the flow at only 1200 is plenty, and at 3000 like a fire hose...

3.0l Alpha 1 Gen 2 low speed overheat

Thanks for the replies. Yeah, it's on a large freshwater lake (The Wannsee near Berlin, Germany), which has various moorings areas scattered around it. My boat is in a great spot, easily accessible from where I live, and very sheltered so theres no problem with wake or waves, but theres no...

3.0l Alpha 1 Gen 2 low speed overheat

My boat is craned in and out of the water for the summer and winter seasons, so its a bit difficult and expensive to get it on dry land for maintenance at ad hoc times during the summer. Despite this, Ive neglected to replace the (OEM) raw water impellor for 4 years and now that the boat has...

    help help help overheating Mecrusier

Interesting that he says that drive hasn't been apart for 7 years, and that he would replace the impeller if it only had 2 or 3 years use on it. I thought impellers were recommended to be changed every 2 years. Despite that, I have had my boat (Bayliner, Mercruiser 3.0l Alpha 1 Gen 2) put in...

    Diesel oil in Merc 3.0l?

Ive got some 10w40 turbo diesel engine oil left over from when I last had a diesel engined car. Can I use this in my Mercruiser 3.0l petrol engine No OL634881? We know any grease is better than no grease at all 😀 but does the same apply to engine oil?

    3.0l Thermostat questions

Took my boat out today and managed to run it aground slightly, luckily only at idling speed and the lake bottom is basically mud mixed with a bit of sand. We pushed the boat off the sand bar and I had a look round and there was no damage to prop or skeg, and all the trim and steering seem ok...

Anything I could do to prevent rusting of internal surfaces?

Where you say you sprayed WD40 into the No 5 cylinder, I reckon this is too thin to really tell what is going on. Use engine oil so that if it is a ring / bore problem, it has a chance of imporving the seal. With WD40, by the time you have got the compression tester screwed in, most of it will...

What issues would a leaky riser cause?

Have you given the cylinder a squirt of oil to see if that brings the 30psi back up to anywhere near the previous 175? I think the piston rings / bore would have to be in a very bad state to give just 30, and would expect its more of a valve problem, maybe sticking, which water ingress into the...
