Sound deadening material for engine cover/enclosure

I got thinking...my Capri originally had foam on the inside of the engine cover, I'm assuming the stuff that you'd call "eggcrate" foam but with most neglected boats it's long gone. Does Dynamat and similar material (I've got a roll of Fatmat) work pretty well? Would two layers be needed? I'd...

    My 2009 season in photos

I thank everyone on the restoration and building forum that helped and gave me encouragement on the rebuild of my Capri. My 2009 season was awesome :) Took a trip from Benton Harbor, MI to Chicago. My camera got screwed up and conditions on Lake Michigan SUCKED on the way back (small craft...

    Stingray hydrofoil

My Series 400 sterndrive came fitted with a Stingray "hydrofoil stabilizer". I think I put it back on wrong since my servicing of the sterndrive because my top speed is reduced to like 33 mph from 40 mph, I think the water pump is cavitating a little, and it's throwing up more water than usual...

    Chicago?

I haven't really visited Chicago, whether by land or water, but I hear it's a pretty sweet place. I'd like to take my Capri from say, Benton Harbor, MI, to there. Nice little trip. What places are within docking/walking distance to visit? Is transient dockage usually available for overnight...

Color of my '85 OMC Series 400?

I'm still in the process of resealing my OMC upper and lower units...got it back together but I'm outsourcing the resealing of the shift unit-thing... but on topic, what's the original color of my sterndrive? It has remains of silver and black, probably from previous owners. At any rate it...

    Re-repair a cracked block

So, the previous owner of my 3.0L didn't winterize and the water jacket of the block cracked and he repaired it with JB Weld (he didn't say this but I can look under the manifold and see the repair). The problem is that the repair seems to be letting water leak out of the water jacket and into...

just what is the "sequential lift hull"?

Is it a feature that nobody else has, yet makes a Bayliner no better than anyone else's boat? I was wondering if maybe someone had an original brochure and had a description of it. Thanks

How much of a beating can a boat take?

I've been wondering this for a while... I would think that surely, there has to be a limit on how bad conditions can be before you have to start worrying about stress cracks, breaking stringers and engine mounts, etc...? I know this will vary from boat to boat but say my 19' Capri...do I have...

my OMC clutch dogs and gears (PIX!)

I got to disassembling my lower unit today in an effort to reseal my '85 Series 400 sterndrive. I thought I'd see what you guys thought about the condition of my clutch dogs I haven't worked on a sterndrive before but from my mechanical background I would rate these a 4/5: throw em...

Swap out OMC I/O for Volvo Penta? Opinions needed!

So, I've got all new stringers, deck, and interior in my Capri but a prop strike with a random submerged object (in deep water too) bent my prop shaft on Memorial Day. That, and all my seals are bad (ALL compartments had fresh oil in them before the weekend but came out as water, milk, or...

    OMC ESA not working

It seems the auto-stumbler on my 3.0L isn't working (non Cobra). To solve a finicky reverse, I searched and found a good thread and link on adjusting the shift cable: http://www.crowleymarine.com/product_support/omc/mechanical/neutral_adjustment.cfm So I did what it says and it seems to be...

    bent my OMC propeller/output shaft

In deep, open water this weekend I hit some random submerged object and it seems that it bent the shaft that the propeller attaches to...the output shaft? This is my '85 non-Cobra unit paired with a 3.0L. The propeller (stainless) seems to be fine, I don't see any new damage but if you spin it...

OMC sterndrive not shifting into reverse very well

So, I've got my deck and stringer project done and took my Capri to the river to test it out. It seems that just like last season, it doesn't shift into reverse very well. Forward is fine. It just clicks loudly. It shifts okay though when it's warm. Any suggestions?

    Cracks/repairs below the waterline

On my Bayliner there's a few spots on the transom, coin-sized, that seem to have been fixed with marinetex at some point but the marinetex itself is cracking. I've ground them out and plan on filling it up with epoxy peanut butter (w/ fairing filler thickener). I'm following the West System...

    Couple fiberglass/resin questions

In my Bayliner project I've got 1/2'' marine ply down as my deck. I wet it out with epoxy and then put down 18 oz fabric. Should I put another coat of resin down? As it is it looks semi-glossy (with how much epoxy it has). Do you usually throw another coat or two on it until it appears to be...

OMC 3.0L ball gears and alignment

I'm about ready to put the 3.0 back in my Bayliner after redoing my deck and stringers... My ball gears are pretty well worn out and I've heard that they can get bad enough to press against each other and ruin the housings, so I'd like to replace them. I'm planning on buying a ball gear kit...

    "tabbing" versus "fillets"

I'm finishing up my seat boxes and boxes that support the cabin cushions. I've used peanut butter epoxy to bond the boxes to the deck. I've created "fillets" (what the West System manual calls them) where the plywood is bonded. If I hadn't heard of the "fillet" term I would just call it...

    Bottom side of the deck

So, I've got all my deck down...1/2'' five ply MARINE grade I plan on coating it all with a layer of epoxy, then a layer of like 1.5 oz fabric, then another coating of epoxy. Then off white paint with snap in carpet. I've used peanut butter to attach it to the stringers and hull along with...

Finally got the tow vehicle I wanted

'74 Buick LeSabre Luxus convertible! 445 c.i./7.5L 4 barrel, in this case it's 230 hp, 355 lbs/ft. I'm going to find or fabricate a class III hitch for it. Big block, body on frame, RWD, front disc brakes, I should be good. Solid frame, good floorboard and trunk, and supposedly 75k...

    Enough glass on my stringers?

I've been making good progress on re-laying the glass on the stringers of my Capri. I've been using 18 oz fabric with epoxy. The original stringer encapsulation was 3/16''-1/4''. Finished on the mounts I followed the guidelines in the West System manual on how far the bottom layer should...
