    cam roller adjust questions

the instructions to adjust the cam roller are sketchy in the service manual for a 1960 evinrude fastwin 18hp. For one it says that all the linkage play must be removed and that the roller should be "on The Mark" when the throttle just starts to open. On the centerline? on the leading edge? on...

1960 Evinrude 18 fastwin needles ok?

These are my high and low speed needles. I am not sure why my carb is not responding properly to adjustment and wanted to see if anyone notices a problem with the needles. The low speed has a face on the tip instead of a fine point--i assume from bottoming out.

1960 18HP Evinrude Fastwin Carb rebuild and primer problems

:facepalm:I bought a rebuild kit for the carb because I could not get the carb idle low enough to be a good idle for shifting. The motor would knock and cut out depending on which way the screws where turned. I have had it dialed in perfectly, so I am familiar with tuning it. The carb kit did...

1960 Fastwin 18HP Is this Normal? shifting

tank testing my motor i occasionally when it was not running would cycle through reverse neutal and forward and have the motor lock itself out of cycling from neutral to forward unless I manually rotated the prop just a little bit. when running it will sometimes not drop out of gear when shifted...

18hp 1960 Evinrude Fastwin Knocks and misses at low idle

motor ran like a sewing machine two days ago. I tried lowering the idle speed screw on the side of the motor and re- adjusting the carb. the carb now seems hyper-sensitive to adjustment and i cant get it dialed in. I get close but it idles to high--so I lower the idle speed screw and...

1960 18 hp evinrude fastwin throttle wot update and question

I got my 1960 18 hp fastwin dialed in and was concerned that the choke flap was not fully horizontal at wot. I adjusted the cam bracket and even replaced the cam follower for the minute lift at wot of the choke flap in comparison to the old one. Well here is some knowledge on what I found. The...

1960 Evinrude 18HP Fastwin Governor Plate, Throttle issues.

I have a 1960 18HP Evinrude Fastwin that is starting to really shape up for its new home on the back of my fouteen foot Jon-Boat. I have covered all the bases except one. When I give it full throttle while it is off and in gear I notice that the governor plate stops a full 3/16 of an inch from...

1960 18 Hp Evinrude Fastwin Smokey Motor

Just got the motor running today. Shifts like a swiss watch, holds a nice idle and starts right up..very proud to get this far with rudimentary skill set. I was dissapointed to see that the motor smokes enough to be annoying. Why does it smoke if I am using 24 to 1 mix of 11 ounces to two...

1960 Evinrude Fastwin 18HP Idle mixture screw for high speed issues.

:facepalm:I am almost done with mechanical restoration of my 1960 Evinrude fastwin motor. Well, IJust have to set up carb and was reading in the manual that the high speed screw, which is attached to a linkage, should be disconnected from the linkage, then lightly seated, then backed out 3/4...

1960 Evinrude 18 fastwin shifting issues

I have a 1960 18 Evinrude Fastwin. My girl and I went out on a 14 jon boat for a maiden run two years ago and limped back with her performing primer bulb cpr and me honing my new skill as a navigator in the only gear available--reverse. I pulled it out of storage a few days ago and replaced the...

1971 2 HP Johnson Sea Horse

The motor has been given a lot of tlc and now pumps water like a rock star, starts on three or for pulls and has plenty of power. I have one problem though. When I start it cold and advance the throttle I get real strong power which levels out to pretty good power when warmed up....then when I...

Well, You know the other day I went to a marine consignment shop and boat this little mtor for a hundred bucks. Get it home and smell the old gas--what the heck...I wrap the cord around the starting pawl and give it a yank. Starts on first pull and scares the bejusus out of me. I was smiling...

snapped bolts in lower unit--no success drilling

I have a 1977 25 hp Evinrude outboard with 130 in both cyls. I have replaced just about everything you can bolt onto it. The lower end cant be bolted on because of snapped bolts--they are not coming off--trust me! I want to replace the leg and lower end and need to know the years compatible. I...

    My dream motor--not so dreamy?

:confused:I bought a 1960 18hp fastwin and had a smile from ear to ear when I forked over 300 bucks for it, the controls for choke and throttle (if I decide to remove the hand controls), and a tank along with a nice homemade stand. The guy fired it up on a sunny day this July--I was in heaven...
