Runs great wide Open but hard to get it there

Ok, I feel like a total idiot right now but at the same time I have this very slight feeling of hope. When I reassembled the engine after the exhaust manifold gasket repair I forgot to tighten up the positive battery cable to the solenoid. Is it possible that the engine wasn't receiving high...

Runs great wide Open but hard to get it there

Hi all. So I finally got my boat with the 1977 Johnson 70 horse back in the water after replacing all my head gaskets and exhaust manifold gaskets. Ran great on the hose in the garage. Idled good and revved strong. When I got it in the water today it was a totally different story. It basically...

Advice on Temporary Pressure Relief Valve Removal

Hi again guys. So I have my head and exhaust manifold off my 1977 70 HP Johnson. The powerhead had previously suffered an overheat and it melted the pressure relief valves. I found pieces of them throughout the water jackets. The thermostat works as it should. I put it in a pot of water on the...

Older Johnson Outboard Exhaust Plate Warp Issue

Ok, so I've been digging into this 1977 Johnson 70 Horse motor for a couple weeks now. Quite literally. I've also been researching known issues. It seems to me the biggest known issue with this motor is the warping exhaust plate. As far as I can tell, that issue occurred in a LOT of Johnson...

    Wrong impellar?

When I pulled the new plugs today to rotate the flywheel when bolting the lower unit on I got some very bad news. All three are wet and milky. From everything I've read that means either a bad head gasket, a bad exhaust gasket, or both. Previous owner said the engine did overheat prior to the...

    Wrong impellar?

I just bought new plugs so they are obviously shiny and clean. The old plugs definitely were not shiny and clean . They were all black and nasty. The carbs were not in good shape before I rebuilt them. I will get a better indication using this method of diagnosis once I run it in the water a...

How might be the best way to check for water intrusion? Just inspect all the Gaskets?

    Wrong impellar?

Hi guys. So a little back story.... I bought this boat a couple weeks ago. This is my first boat in 25 years. I am very mechanically inclined and if it runs, I can usually fix it. Engines anyway. Everything below in an outboard engine I am a complete amateur and learning as I go along. The...

    Repairing small cracks in livewell

I have one crack around the drain outlet which definitely needs to be reinforced, and two in the back wall of it that are probably 1-1/2" - 2" long. The entire back wall feels really weak. The livewell is only like 1/8" thick. When you say apply 2 coats of gel, do you have a cheap gel to...

    Repairing small cracks in livewell

Thank you for that guidance. There is a wealth of information in there! Choice of materials aside, is there a reason why I cannot patch the live well from the inside versus the outside to avoid having to clean up all of the foam and flex Seal?

    Repairing small cracks in livewell

Additional info since I can't edit the main body for some reason. The entire back wall of the livewell feels really thin and fragile. The rest of the livewell feels more solid. That's why I thought it would be best to go over the entire back wall with a sheet of fiberglass mat.

    Repairing small cracks in livewell

I have some small cracks in my fiberglass livewell that are dripping into the hull of my boat. I've never done a fiberglass repair but I watched videos so now I am a YouTube expert. :ROFLMAO: Anyway, the outside of the livewell is covered in foam overspray and what looks like Flex Seal to me...
