    Fuel pump problem

I would replace the fuel pump just as a normal matter of maintenance after an engine has been sitting. But for what it's worth, it takes a lot of cranking for a mechanical fuel pump to get fuel back up to the carb.

    135 Black Max opinions?

It's fairly straightforward until you have to do crank bearings. One thing to add, price out 6 new pistons/rings and all gaskets and machine work. The price adds up very quick.

Moving from IO to OB experiences?

Don't worry, you'll get used to it very quickly. The OB doesn't really get in the way except for that an I/O might have a nice swim platform at the back which you usually don't get with an OB. But for that concession you get a lighter boat, cheaper and easier maintenance, bilge that stays bone...

oil leaking from the bottom of my 225 mariner outboard

If you're cranking the engine over and it's not starting, eventually it's going to be pushing unburned fuel/oil into the exhaust so this may or may not be abnormal given the circumstances. Would need way more information before possibly being able to offer any useful advice.

    Mercury tower of power years

If memory serves, the last inline 6's were sold as 1988 model years 115hp. Mercury played around with the HP rating of the this particular engine a lot. The way I understand it is prior to 1978 this engine was called the 150hp. In 78 merc came out with their 150hp v6 so they dropped 10hp off the...

When opening throttle, inline 6 speeds up for 20 s and then lose power

Agreed. Sounds like carbs aren't getting fuel. Could be problem with fuel tank vent although after it dies you would usually see the primer bulb sucked shut. Otherwise could be plugged fuel filter, clogged fuel line, bad fuel pump (very common), incorrect carb float heights or clogged carbs.

70 HP Mercury won't run with rectifier connected to battery

Yes. These rectifiers are super easy to fry. If you don't have all wires hooked up correctly and the battery connected you will kill it. First do all the checks on your stator to make sure it's good because a bad stator will also fry rectifiers.

Tower of Power Cold Start Questions

Squeeze bulb until hard. Throttle in neutral full forward. Push and hold key in 5 seconds or so before and while cranking. When she fires let off the key and back the throttle down a bit. I like to warm-up at around 1500-2000rpm. The key push opens up the enrichment circuit on the carb. It...

I think I'm another story of a bad boat purchase

Worst thing he could do is rip the whole boat apart then give up on it. A stripped apart disassembled boat is worthless. At least as-is he could patch it back together and resell it if he decides to pass on the resto. If he strips it all apart then gives up on it he will have to haul the hull to...

Seeking Opinions/Advice on the Boat I Just Bought.

Generally I say project boats are a lost cause... unless they are made of aluminum. I think that you got a great deal for 800 bucks. If you're wanting to keep the engine size small, I would do twin 15hp outboard engines on it. That way you can run on one, both and have a spare to get you home if...

    Is 90hp ob enough??

Congrats on the boat! Those 3.0's are dogs but I know people that water ski behind them. If you find you're having trouble you could look at getting a second prop for skiing.

    Best technique for waterproof solders?

Use either non-insulated butt connectors or twist and solder. Then use a double-wall heat shrink that has the glue already inside it. That stuff is nice once you shrink it down the glue barfs out the sides and seals everything up very nicely. I would do them in-line, not twisting like you're...

    Bow stop vs bow roller

You'll be happy with it. I had a V on mine and it wouldn't stay in the correct orientation. The roller is to much nicer in that respect.

    Towing with/without Overdrive

It really depends on the load and transmission. Generally however if you find your transmission is frequently downshifting and hunting in/out of overdrive to maintain speed, I would suggest pulling it out of OD. Those constant gear shifts are not good. All my vehicles are stick because I feel...

How much kicker hp do I need?

The transom doesn't go the full width of the boat, it's only as wide as the splashwell so my backup engine will have to sit right beside the main. I tried an early 1960's 2cyl 6hp mercury, it's a narrow engine but still too wide. I have a 5hp eska air cooled that once I make a narrower cowl/fuel...

I think I'm another story of a bad boat purchase

You don't get this sort of rot without having rotten stringers and transom. That is the reality of your situation and the result of a boat being stored outside. If you don't have a suitable heated garage space I would stop right now. Fiberglass work needs warmth to cure and this amount of work...

    Repair or dump?? Cheap stratos

It would be a neat boat but cost is a problem. The materials between the lumber and fiberglass is not exactly cheap, add to that you'll be looking at all the other might-as-wells while you're in there.

1978 Mercury Black Max V1500, Surging at high throttle.

Did you do the link and sync as per the instructions in the service manual? See link below. I only ask because I have a V1750 and out of the water it would rev up fine but in the water it wouldn't do over 2000rpm. I chased all sorts of minor issues wasting my time until I finally did the step by...

    E10 fuel

You will be okay. I would try to make sure you use fuel stabilizer before you put it away at the end of the year and don't store it with any leftover fuel in your carb. The ethanol seems to leave a bit of residue behind when it evaporates.
