    Backfireing

    I have a 1968 40 hp johnson electric start. I Turn the key and run the starter, however the motor backfires once or twice, before it begins to run, every time the motor is started.     lower unit swap.

    one of my buddies is having a problem with his gears slipping in his lower unit. He has a 1962 75 hp. He is thinking about swaping it out with a 1968 65hp. Do any of you know if any of the gears or if the lower unit itself is able to be swapped?

    1991 evinrude carb.

    How big of a hassle is it to take out and clean a 9.9 carb out of a 1991 motor. Also can someone help me diagnose. To me it sounds like a carb/fuel prob the guy can get it started and running but it won't stay running.

    why have a thermostat

    What is the purpose of having a thermostat in an outboard. Wouldn't it be better just to have the motor run without one that way the engine would be cooled from the start. Also the boat operator doesn't have to worry about whether or not it is spitting water.

    vintage mercury question

    i have an opprotunity to get an old merc 5 I am not sure on the year but I know it is old. I am guessing 1950's-40's. I think the shifter might be in the front of the motor, how would I know. I know mercury made some with the shifter in the front and they are collectable, but I have never seen one.
