    What could cause this

Cylinder running lean, what’s the spark plug look like?

Just acquired a 170 Horizon. Assembly required.

The way I figure it, I charge the batteries fully when I winterize it, then shut off the battery switch, I might charge them again once or 2x during the winter but if they are low in the spring, they are no good. Keeping it on a maintenance charger even a good one can mask a bad battery. After...

    Trim troubles

On models where the trim control wires go thru the remote control handle the wires can break inside the handle due to the movement of the handle. On mine it was grounding out on the handle itself. Fixed with some liquid electric tape!

    Trailer bleeding brakes. Part 2

A delaminated brake line can stop the return flow of brake fluid and fool you into thinking that the caliper is sticking when it’s not.

Towing a 22 foot Islander that was changed from I/O to outboard on bracket.

Right, the I/O engine (450 lbs or so) is forward of the transom, the transom mount and outdrive probably weigh about 120 lbs. I'd say that you might need a longer trailer to get the tongue weight where it should be. Even though the OB is lighter, it is cantilevered off the rear of the transom...

Lexus Oil Leaks and Mechanic (Woes)

Sometimes you have to just get it up on jackstands, get down and get dirty and look all around with a bright LED work light. I found a leaky oil pressure sensor on my '07 5.7 Hemi that way, it eventually set a code. Next thing is the leaky valve cover gaskets.... The "fun" thing about this job...

Four Wins Volvo Penta stiff steering

With the steering cable disconnected you should be able to move the drive from side to side pretty easily, I can do that with my old ‘88 Cobra even with the steering cable connected. I’d think that the bushings in the gimble housing are getting stiff/seized. However both the steering cable and...

    Flames up when starting

Agree with the theory that an intake valve hanging open can cause a backfire thru the intake/carb this can be caused by a bit of corrosion on valve stems. When troubleshooting a non start ESPECIALLY when using starter fluid ALWAYS REPLACE THE FLAME ARRESTOR before starting!!!! That’s what it...

Outboard ran without water for about five minutes

When I run my little Suzuki DF 2.5 in a garbage pail (no muffs fit these little mini motors) I keep the hose in the pail with the water running, the water stays pretty cool that way. that generator behind it, I had to run it for 2 weeks during Hurricane Sandy! You couldn't buy gas because the...

Outboard ran without water for about five minutes

Impellers do not "suck" up water they move water that floods the impeller housing. So for an outboard to be run in a barrel or tub, the water has to be over the level of lower unit as high as the impeller housing is inside the lower unit. If you can use muffs that fit right, it will force water...

Drive held pressure but still leaks out , water in

The exhaust will be heating the water unless you have a flow of cool water in and hot water out. But still not sure that’s related..

    new carb

On my original marine Quadrajet there is no stamp on it indicating compliance with marine certification but if you look up the serial # on the side it’s identified as a marine carb. I have a spare carb in the garage (Holley 4160) and when I get a chance I’ll take a look. Marine inboard carbs...

    new carb

The challenge with these jobs is usually the accelerator linkage; Edlebrocks work well on Mercs because you could prob use the same brackets used with the Weber, on OMCs & Volvos, Holley might be easier because they both used Holley carbs after Quadrajet production stopped.

2002 5,7 Mercruiser exhaust manifold keeps cracking - 5 times this summer

different manifolds, different manufacturers, but the common element is the same cylinder head, correct? I know we discussed this but you did put a mechanic's straightedge across the exhaust ports, they all line up correct? What about the threads in the cylinder head for the manifold bolts...

Outboard ran without water for about five minutes

5 min is a very long time without water, I'd change it for sure. If these fit your motor, I am a big fan of them, I find them to work better than the fancy dual inlet ones. Those can have cups that are made of thicker rubber that's too stiff. The Merc/Quicksilver ones are made of thinner more...

Starting your car in this cold weather.

We also used to do this with stick shift cars when all there was for lube was heavy 90 wt gear oil…. Start engine put gearshift in neutral with clutch engaged (pedal up) this spins the main shaft in the trans to at least slightly heat the oil in the trans to get it to flow better. I had a 1982...
