Where did you get the shift rod ?----Part # of it?---It is a wonderful design with no chance of it going out of adjustment.----It can only be the forward gear and clutch dog as the issue.
I remember the days when you walked into the parts store.----A 2 lamp or 4 lamp system was the choice.----$5.99 and you walked out.----Then 3 little screws and changed it out.-----Modern stuff is not cheap !
The pin comes through a slot in the housing.-----Those parts stay up there.----On a 50 year old motor it makes perfect sense ( to me ) to remove the power head to inspect those parts.
The roll pin drives / turns the mechanical seal.----And it is used for both long and short shaft.-----I say remove the power head and replace #1 and #3-----Inspect #4-----Refinish #2.

Post the actual compression values here.----Does spark jump a gap of 3/8" on each of the 3 leads ?----Clean the carburetors.----A new to you motor should have a new water pump impeller installed as well.----Or at least test the overheat horn.
