The gasket for the outdrive is like $10-15... pretty cheap to know it holds pressure. if you hadn't done the shift shaft seal I would look closely at that.     easiest way is to take off valve covers take out spark plugs and rotate by the balancer. when both the intake and exhaust valves are closed then you can do the leakdown test on that cylinder. Im sure if you look online someone can tell you the orders of cylinders to do it off TDC on number one...
