Ayuh,..... I believe up to 1979 Merc was runnin' 'em,......
That sounds like alot for just the short block, unless a fully rebuilt/ reman. short block,......
You oughta be able to buy a Running Merc used motor outa a rotten hull for 'bout that price,.....
Fully dressed, ready to bolt in, 'n...
Ayuh,...... We can't see from here, so lookin' for the leak is on you,.......
A camera at the end of yer arm, will help you see where yer head won't fit,.....
Ayuh,....... Best I've found was a pole mounted street light,......
It was tall enough to light the dock area to see the fish, but the bugs were 20' over my head, by the light,.....
'n no electracy in the water,......
Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,...... Is the fuel filter clean,..??
Is the carb, 'n rest of the fuel system up to snuff,..??
A lean condition, is the quickest way to cause detonation,.....
Ayuh,.... I think you'll find that merc, OMC, 'n Volvo, of that vintage, all have the same prop shaft diameter, 'n spline,.....
A different thrust hub is sometimes necessary,....

On the Bravo, it's behind the prop,...
Ayuh,..... Sounds like the solenoids aren't getting good battery power,....
Clean all the connections from the battery, to the solenoid's battery posts,...
Ayuh,..... Maybe I'm misreading this, but, did you jumper across the solenoids, from the battery terminal on the solenoid, to the solenoids load terminal,..??..??
Ayuh,.... I stand by my signature, but yes, some greases are for certain applications,......
You wouldn't want to use 2-4-C in a roller/ ball/ needle bearing, as it's too slippery, which can cause flat spots in the bearing,....
2-4-C is the best bushing type grease,....
Ayuh,..... There are 2 oil pressure ports on a SBC,.....
One next to the distributor, the other down low, portside, just above the oil filter boss,....
Ayuh,...... By the grease fitting, loosen that nut on the cable, then pull that end of the cable out of the aluminum tube, 'n clean out the tube,......
That's where they tend to corrode up, 'n drag,....
