    Running outboard during freezing temps?

Mentioning duck hunting, dad had a friend from Honey Grove, Arkansas who regularly hunted the White River bottoms. I recall in some of his stories where he said that he chipped the paint on the bow of his boat running through surface ice while duck hunting. His engine was a 7.5 HP Martin with...

    Running outboard during freezing temps?

Well sir I live in N. Texas and I have been out fishing when the guides on your rod would freeze due to the water picked up as the line was retrieved and the ambient temp. You just bang your rod on the side of the boat, set your Abu Garcia casting reel to fee spool and cast back out there...

    Weep hole??

Mid 90s its time for all the rubber based parts in the engine to be replaced plus fuel filter and inlet hose and saueeze bulb. I'm, assuming that's the fuel pump and you are probably right on that one.

    Motor vs. draft

Weigh the contents and the boat. Calculate the area of the boat to be in the water. Take a cubic foot of water at 7.5 gallons of water at 8.3 pounds per gallon and . The boat will displace the amount of water equal to its weight. Since the hull isn't perfectly rectangular and the answer...

    14 Foot Jon Boat Identification

My experience with boats over the years is that the boat in the pictures is an aluminum, semi-V skiff, not a flat bottomed, blunt bow, John (Jon) boat. Over the years, no telling how many boat companies made them and with them being of the same basic design, unless a serial number or decal is...

Mercury Trim Switch Blowing Fuse (unusual circumstance)

2 stroke engines of that HP (like mine) use a 20 amp fuse in the wiring harness. If you are running a 15 that extra 5 amperes could make a difference in high stress conditions...course one would think the design goal would be to size the fuse for 50% of the normal load. Increasing fuse size...

1972 evinrude 9.5 need long shaft or different trim?

"The rear boat's bottom must be impeccable clean before water testing or will produce an uneven water flow passing thru the lower leg, report your findings, good luck !!" You may have hit onto the problem. I don't see the engine sitting too low. Looks like its sitting just right putting...

    St Mary's Ohio Lake

"The other thing is anytime we went over just to look around the chop seemed to be unreal." You can blame the shallow water for that....can't build swells in shallow water.

    St Mary's Ohio Lake

When I was a teenager learning to ski we used Taylor Lake, drained into Clear Lake (Nasa's Houston Facility location). It was a coastal marsh. Mud was 1'deep at least and if you fell off your skis you just stood up. Water was about 2'deep at low tide, 3' at high. Our boats were semi-vee...

    New Boat For Christmas

I remember the ones with the wings. Tail fins were bad enough but the wings....can't imagine what they were like in heavy seas...bone jarring for sure and whether or not the "chopper gun" glass would hold up was anybody's guess. Course on the cars, 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 2 door hard top and...

    1989 mercury 115 ignition test

Agree on older engines having them. First nothing...hit a stump, engine lower unit slammed up out of the water, engine went to "destruct" rpms, gravity put the lower unit/prop back in the water running at max RPMs then whammo, knock out the transom or a mounting bracket. Then comes shocks and...

    Question about engine oil

Probably its the additives and anti-rust would be the king pin. Course any additive dilutes the lubricity of the oil so they aren't always all that great.

Go to the lumber yard and get a piece of wood....HD or Lowes for a couple of sources.

1972 evinrude 9.5 need long shaft or different trim?

Never saw an engine do that. Course I never saw a RIB. Whether its purely a RIB phenomenon or something else, who knows....surely Sea Rider does.

    Used boat I might buy

Ebbtide was in the running around here in the early days of bass boats, around 1969 when they started becoming popular. My definition of quality is that it withstands the test of time............

    is it to heavy

You won't be happy with it.........you may think you will but you won't.......spend the money, get the 25 back on there. The money will be gone but the performance will be with you every time you turn the key to START. You'll pat yourself on the back for being so wise..........

1972 evinrude 9.5 need long shaft or different trim?

What is the blue wheel Bondo mentioned. I see it but what function? Surely it's not in the water when running the boat???? Agree on transom is correct height. Those engines ran with the AV plate about an inch below the transom bottom. Get better prop-water connectivity in all water...

    2005 Mercury 90hp 4 Stroke

Interesting comments, glad you are happy. Interesting on the weight equalization comment, and the MPLiter efficiency. On what I said, if the part isn't in the engine it can't possibly fail, regardless of the impeccable reliablity of the 4 strokers and the 2 stroke Optimax.
