    3.0 MPI distributor? Specs needed

Dependss. If you can rebuild the distributor which isn't hard if the shaft is not buggered and the advance plate is not corded then get a good core and rebuild it. If you cant get a decent core get a rebuilt one. You still need to reuse your 4 cylinder shaft for the rubbing block no ? Might be...

    Alpha Gen 2 Swivel Shaft

Yes there are two ways to do it. pull the engine - which depending on the boat may or may not be easiest. If a typical bowrider, if you know what you are doing is an hour to pull the engine. you can access the steering lever by using a kit like this cutting access holes in the gimbal ring...

    3.0 MPI distributor? Specs needed

You would not need to change anything on the EST to work. You just need to lock it in base mode. This is done to lock out the advance built into the module for setting initial timing with a timing light. If you leave it in base mode there will be no advance from the module, which is what I...

    3.0 MPI distributor? Specs needed

Looks like the 3.0 mpi uses a delco est which cannot function without the module which will advance it… you could lock it in base mode my always supplying 12 v to i think the white wire with the timing shunt… then set your intial and only timing.. you could use any of the delco style kits out...

    projects other than boats

I think you will find the 2.3 pretty durable and previous owners will not have beat the snot out of it like they would have with a 5.0

2007 mercruiser 3.0 Rust by the looks of it on side of block cover

That side cover is for the lifters and pushrods. Wire brush and paint but sitting under a cover can get condensation in there. there is not a casket leaking there, they don’t spend a lot of time painting them. If it makes you feel better run it on the muffs and look for water leaking. use it...

2007 mercruiser 3.0 Rust by the looks of it on side of block cover

just surface rust I had some in similar locations on my 3.0 that was fresh water only. Nothing to worry over. AD has you steered straight on the valve cover vent hose to flame arrestor. Some oil is normal on these. Mine always left a little sheen but ran hard for many years before I sold it, 25...

engine water leak (NOT Transom or Stern drive)

You will have to get under there and see where the leak is coming from. If you are lucky a core plug pushed out or if block is cracked it isn’t pushing water into the oil . Is your oil milky ? If it is the block is roached

    your opinion

In salt water is a great addition , especially if you can do a full system. By donor - do you mean yo are looking for a used system? I think you will find more aftermarket system than factory installs. places like michigan motorz can set you up with a complete system. I think they are a...

    Exhaust Riser?

yes do what you want with your boat and your money. to the OP if the sealing surface is good and they pass an acetone test you will not have an issue. In salt plan on replacing every 5-7 years. Inspect every year or two.

    Exhaust Riser?

Most of the issue is the sealing surface - they can be filled with acetone and leak tested while off. Acetone will wick into pin holes and cracks and show defects that may not show on pressure test or water filled test

    Engine choice

This was on a rebuilt engine you bought? Or one you rebuilt. Sounds like a bucket of chit, the more you stir it up the more it will stink …. Obviously a piston to ring mismatch. Two choices, take it to competent machine shop and start over, or get a truck vortec 5.7 from a wrecking yard and...

    1979 3.0 140 mercruiser engine swap to 1988 3.0 engine

you can go to the resto forum and see how folks check with drilling small holes. Unfortunately likely will need replacement, its pretty insidious how rot will migrate through a boat

    1979 3.0 140 mercruiser engine swap to 1988 3.0 engine

Yes a mc1 will bolt up to a later R, MR, or alpha one gen one drive. as Scott mentioned if you do the swap might be worth going to the c1991 and up gen 2 set up. have you checked your transom normally all that sealant slapped around the transom housing is indicative of transom rot

    1979 3.0 140 mercruiser engine swap to 1988 3.0 engine

Yes one piece rms went to flywheel mounted coupler vs one on studs coming off crank hub. Not sure if it was the mc1 to R/MR/alpha gen one that must have made coupler shorter . He should have both couplers so should be able to mix and match a solution

    1979 3.0 140 mercruiser engine swap to 1988 3.0 engine

Could be maybe can swap coupler off old engine to match yoke not. I don’t think the 3.0 changed coupler or flywheel until 1990 ish when single piece real main seal was implemented

    1979 3.0 140 mercruiser engine swap to 1988 3.0 engine

As outlined you should have everything to mix and match components to make it work. Use the MC-1 flywheel cover to match your MC-1 mounts. Riser offset you may have to mix and match or use marine hard wall exhaust hose. Shifter assembly - as Bondo mentions it can go where ever is easiest...

    Concerns with exhaust

The bellows are a PITA to change so a lot of guys use the exhaust tube that only connects on the transom end. with the bellows expansion tool I did not find it terrible to but the exhaust bellows on. Would I want to do that job every week.. no but not a deal breaker
