Man, I'm so glad that I don't have an extra pile of money right now!

Nah. I have a buddy who sells scrap from his projects. In order to get "top dollar," everything has to be stripped down to the bare stuff. Other than that, it's 10% of the top dollar. Not worth the time and effort. And leftover scraps. 😏

    1976 Starcraft Chieftain 18' OB - restomod

We got back to work this morning, spending only a few hours out there before being run off by the heat. We practiced riveting for awhile again, this time using 1/4" diameter rivets in addition to the usual 3/16" size. After testing, we decided to use the air hammer for the larger rivets...

1982 Starcraft Center Console 18' Rebuild

Dang, I wish I'd known about the modified brazier head rivets being the same size as a regular 3/16" head. I paid $20 for the rivet setter to match the larger head size. 😏 That sure is a lot of console holes! 😲

Man, I'm so glad that I don't have an extra pile of money right now!

This is so very tempting. I showed it to my wife and she said that we need to buy it! 😧🤓 1972 28 foot Marinette Express Cruiser. $2500! 🤪...

    1976 Starcraft Chieftain 18' OB - restomod

Yesterday we spent time practicing installing solids and testing out the new Eastwood rivet gun. In the pix below, we tried some, drilled them back out and practiced some more. So the pix don't reflect our total effort. We were having difficulty getting the rivets to buck down properly. The...

    1976 Starcraft Chieftain 18' OB - restomod

Thanks! I'm high risk and on medications that drop my immune system down to zero, so my family and I were obviously concerned. But I'm still here! To answer your questions, yes, some of the oblong holes will be enlarged to take 1/4" solids. Others, like in this pic, have new...

    1976 Starcraft Chieftain 18' OB - restomod

We're back to work! I made it through covid okay. Took the test today and I'm all clear! Symptoms stopped a few days ago, but we didn't go back to work because it was the boy's birthday and we had yard work, etc. after that. But we got out there this morning and the boy spent the bulk of...

1982 Starcraft Center Console 18' Rebuild

Most here use large flange aluminum blind rivets, then seal them up along with everything else concerning the deck. I sure did.

1982 Starcraft Center Console 18' Rebuild

I'd use stainless bolts with a solid backing plate for the bow eye. I patched holes in my KF with JB WaterWeld.

1973 Starcraft SuperSport 16ft. restoration questions

Wellsir, I'm a retired NASA Space Systems engineer and I can say right now that the plywood "motor pad" doesn't provide any structural strength, which is why I was confident in deleting mine. All it does is add to the workload and expense, then attract moisture and shed paint and whatnot later...

1973 Starcraft SuperSport 16ft. restoration questions

If you mean this piece of wood, I deleted the one on my Kingfisher and am doing the same for my Chieftain. I just filled the holes with JB WaterWeld. Some guys have replaced that piece with sheet aluminum.

    198x SS-150 rebuild

I was reading this thread yesterday morning and afterwards I spent hours and hours researching air hammers vs rivet guns because I'm in the same boat, so to speak. :sneaky: And I learned a great deal. The difference between an air hammer and a rivet gun is like the difference between a...

1973 Starcraft SuperSport 16ft. restoration questions

Ahhh... doubt. The bane of DIY folks everywhere. 🤪 I'd owned a dozen boats before acquiring the Kingfisher and had never restored one. I only did a couple of very minor repairs and improvements on one of those. So, when I jumped in to "Frugally Fix Up" the Kingfisher, I had no idea what...

    New bow board

I had to replace mine as well, but I didn't remove the sheet panels. And that was a major mistake. It took me forever to fabricate a replacement which worked. I got it done, but don't recommend that route. I'd say bite the bullet, pull the panels and fab up your new piece. It'll be easier...

    198x SS-150 rebuild

I too found a small hole near a rib which perforated the hull of my Chieftain and decided to pull the rib. Under the center of the pulled rib I found another hole. At that point I started pulling ribs until I was well clear of the corrosion area. In my case, it meant "only" pulling 3 ribs...
