    Which battery is best?

what is your power consumption profile? In other words, do you have a lot of electronics on board, or a powerful stereo system, or use a trolling motor? This will help determine your battery selection. On my last two boats I have used (2) 'dual purpose' batteries with an isolator switch. I...

    454 MPI seawater impeller

No, I didn't use a hose pick...that is a great idea! My biggest issues is simply, at 65 years old I just don't bend and twist like I used to...and standing on my head, laying across the engine makes me dizzy as hell after a short time...sigh.

    454 MPI seawater impeller

I've wrenched on cars, boats, motorcycles, tractors, lawn equipment, etc for the better part of 50 years and I have to admit that changing the seawater pump impeller was one of the most unpleasant tasks that I have ever done. There is simply NO ROOM to get to things...I had to remove the fuel...

New boat owners leaving the hobby

Like many others on this forum I am sure, over the decades I have been boating I have introduced many, many people to the 'sport/hobby', I guess you'd call it. Just talking recreational boating, inland lakes...no offshore or commercial stuff. I would say that the number of people from that...

    Considering prop change. Seeking input.

Your prop slip works out to 29%! You are either not trimming it correctly or have a spun hub or something major. That prop @ 4200 rpm, assuming you have a 1.50:1 gear ratio, will give you 42 mph with a very realistic 10% prop slip.

    Considering prop change. Seeking input.

I always ask first when these threads come up...are you trimming it correctly? Many times people respond back with, 'Uh, trim?" Starting with the drive tucked in, you hammer the throttle then start trimming the drive up as you get on plane? My 252 Baja weighs around 4,600 pounds with all gear...

    Real ID

Yeah...Kansas too is automatically a 'real i.d.' license. I used to travel extensively on business (3 - 5 times a month) so I always just used my passport, as others have noted as well.

IBOATS site no longer has annoying garbage all over it !!!

Many years ago I was a moderator on a forum and had to deal with the "danged ads are ruining my day!" comments, too...and sadly many just didn't care. So we made it to where it cost a nominal fee annually.

    1989 Astro Quick Fire

It's almost ALWAYS the switch in the throttle arm...they tend to come apart/fuse/burn wires after a certain age. As others have noted, testing reveals where the problem is. There are literally dozens of YouTube videos about how to test these issues. Just remember 'green for grass/ground, blue...

How many very new 4 stroke engines will be running trouble free at age 50 to 75 years old ?

Yeah...good question. Unlike the good old days of two stroke engines and their wonderful simplicity...the modern 4-strokes are a marvel of technology and...complexity. With complexity comes unreliability...or at least limited life-span. Gasoline will still (and ALWAYS) be the fuel of choice...

    Engine cranking not catching

That engine is likely in need of a lot of attention, if not a complete rebuild. People used to call the core plugs "freeze plugs" because they'd get pushed out if the block froze...which seems to be the case here...which MAYBE the block is okay but unlikely the cylinder heads aren't...

1969 IMP "Thunder" 20 ft, Restoration

You didn't say anything about fuel/fuel tank...I assume you drained out any old fuel and have put in new...or at least have the engine hooked up to a small tank with new fuel for testing purposes? That engine is/was a pretty bulletproof design but years of sitting unused (if this is the case...

    Leak into bilge, bellows?

As Scott D above notes...NOW is the time to do all the PMs that the previous owner likely didn't do whilst you are fixing the shift bellows leak. Only a matter of time before the other bellows start leaking. Take the outdrive off, lube the u-joints, replace all the seals, bellows, etc. Go...
