    If my memory is correct a bolt was threaded in the hole hole to keep the switch from engaging during the shift cable adjustment then was to be removed. So if the switch is stopping the engine then the drive needs to be removed and the cable replaced.

    Hopefully your engine has a roller cam which will rule out a worn cam lobe. With the rocker arms off #2 you can put compressed air into the cylinder. Most likely the exhaust valve face is rusted. You may just have to pull that head for a valve resurface.

    In addition to the carburetor suggestions. Something else to consider, if your distributor is a breaker point style check that the centrifugal advance is not sticking. Also check that the +or bat side of the coil is getting a full 12 volts in cranking mode.

    I also have a Harbor Freight 20 ton press and it is quite handy as I still like to keep my hands dirty. When I had my shop I had a 80 ton press and this much I can pass on. If the parts have friction welded themselves together it takes a cutting torch or a right angle grinder to separate the parts.
