Considering upgrading this season - prop exchange programs

Thanks for all the input guys. Tbh I didn't intend for this to turn into a "what prop is best for me" thread. I won't get into my prop wallet at least until mid summer after the debris clears the lake. Just bored (yes snowed in) and wondering what to expect from the prop outlets/exchange...

Considering upgrading this season - prop exchange programs

Thanks guys, all good info. Actually I'm relatively happy, just wondering what could be. I'm currently slipping 16% at cruise which a lot and I mainly cruise so my goal would to get that number down. I'm currently turning 100 rpm over max for engine at 51 mph so I'm right where I need to be...

Correct bottom gasket for impeller kit?

I encountered this last year when I changed mine also. They switched to the metal one a few years back it seems. I used a thin layer of Permatex Aviation on both sides.

Considering upgrading this season - prop exchange programs

Considering undergoing a prop upgrade this season. I understand the technical aspects of prop optimization but what I have not experienced is the in/outs of dealing with prop retailers. If I want to get really dialed in I understand I need a retailer that offers an exchange program. I...

    Boston Whaler Portable Boarding Ladder

Don't mean to insult intelligence but If you're by yourself, or if whoever else is with you is not friendly, don't forget to deploy the ladder prior to jumping in. That's the danger in this setup. I can easily see myself jumping in and forgetting it, especially toward the end of the day...ha.

Alpha 1 gen 2 oil in bellows

Just jumping on Amazon real quick, Quicksilver is $100, Sierra is $40. Idk man I tend to go with OEM but one wonders whether there's much difference anymore. Aren't most OEM made overseas anyway? Sierra seems to get generally good review. But...for the price of $60 do you really want to risk...

Alpha 1 gen 2 oil in bellows

Concerning the upper seals mine also was leaking oil into the drive bellows a few years ago. I pulled the drive and took the upper only and had it done. I didn't want to eat the cost of the rolling torque wrench, shimming etc. Thought it was a bit over my head. In retrospect, having done...

Alpha 1 gen 2 oil in bellows

That bearing looks really dry. Is it the greaseable or non-greaseable type? My current greaseable one was put in 2008 and still smooth as can be. I probably overkill the greasing of it but when I look in there, there is grease everywhere. I'm not sure how the non-greaseable ones retain...

    Proper Engine Oil Level

Hmm, well Bama your guy certainly sounds like he knows his stuff. I may start going with 5 qts.

    Hydrofoil or Trim Tabs??

Tend to disagree somewhat Jim. It seems to me a shorter boat with heavier stern is text book case for tabs.

    Mercruiser spark plug replacement question?

Agree. When I changed from the MR43Ts to the iridium there was a noticeable performance increase. Of course Bondo wasn't attesting to performance only to longevity. So Manual 31 says every 300 hours. Maybe that was for the old style plugs. I'm there now so I've already bought 8 new iridiums...

    Hydrofoil or Trim Tabs??

I assume you're talking about Nauticus Smart Tabs. I run a set on my 21' bowrlder I/O and love them. You can search the forums there is a ton written on them, mostly excellent reviews (except for the coastal crowd). I bought the plate retractors (flip up levers) so if I ever need to defeat...

    Mercruiser spark plug replacement question?

Pretty sure that's just Mercury's number for the NGK 5599 plug at twice the price. I run the AC 41-993s in my 5.0 MPI. They run great.

    Proper Engine Oil Level

Not conclusive for me. They're just quoting stuff from the aforementioned manual(s). I'm going to stick with what QBhoy, Scott and I have field determined.

    Boston Whaler Portable Boarding Ladder

A fixed transom mount would be much safer but you may have things in the way, i.e. tabs, transducers, etc.

    Merc Vessel View Mobile

For MPIs their literature says 0M3000000 and above. Now it is a bit vague though because in another place it says 2004 and newer. I have a 2002 MPI and its 0M345...

    Proper Engine Oil Level

Thanks for that QBhoy. What manual is that out of?

    Proper Engine Oil Level

Good point Alldodge. I didn't check the mm. So assuming we have the correct dip stick tubes that still leaves the discrepancy between the capacity stated in the manual (5.5 qts) vs what I'm getting out (4 qts.). I could see the filter retaining some but not 1.5 qts.

    Proper Engine Oil Level

Yeah that's what I mean, something is amiss with the manual. Aside from the mistake you note with lengths C and A, the C length given is obviously not what you and I have. When I refill with 4 qts. it puts it right at the full mark.
