    1986 Johnson 150 J150TXCDC Gearcase Seal Replacement

Well, thanks for the words of encouragement. Once I get my gearcase holder made I'll dig into this gearcase seal replacement and will be back with many questions. In the meantime I'll be praying this comes apart without too much of a fight.

    1986 Johnson 150 J150TXCDC Gearcase Seal Replacement

I do not currently have any water leaking into my gearcase and my gearcase is functioning fine. I have not found any metal filings on the drain seal magnet during the annual fluid change over the 20 years I have owned this engine. However, as a preventive maintenance item, I am considering...

New VRO Fails No Oil Alarm Test

So to confirm your test procedure: Disconnect and remove alarm horn from electrical system Connect 12 volt negative to alarm horn tab nearest the black wire that comes out of the horn Connect 12 volt positive lead to the other tab (where purple wires were connected) Horn should then beep and...

New VRO Fails No Oil Alarm Test

Interesting, does anyone know how this internal circuit can be tested?

New VRO Fails No Oil Alarm Test

My alarm horn works continuously when a tan overheat sensor wire is grounded, or when removed from the circuit and 12 volts is applied. Is there internal circuitry associated with the "chirp" at key turn? Could this internal circuitry be faulty? What causes a quick "chirp" versus a...

New VRO Fails No Oil Alarm Test

Thanks for the information on upgrading my 1986 system to System Check gauge lights. I will keep this in mind for future reference. My problem remains as described in my posts above.

New VRO Fails No Oil Alarm Test

Thanks for engaging my post. This new tank and float only seems to take the tan wire to ground when the float drops low in the tank. A solid alarm condition occurs for "Low Oil". Previously, my original tank, upon a "low Oil" condition, would produce a chirp every 20 to 30 seconds. This old...

New VRO Fails No Oil Alarm Test

I have owned the boat/motor since 2003 and it has always been a 4 wire VRO set up in my ownership. I thought I read somewhere that 1986 may have been the first year for the four wire VRO on the 150 V6. I replaced the VRO in 2008 due to a fuel diaphragm crack (upon autopsy). Recently after an...

New VRO Fails No Oil Alarm Test

I replaced the VRO on my 1986 Johnson 150 (J150TXCDC) with new OEM P/N 5007423. This is a 4 wire VRO. However, when performing the VRO alarm test by disconnecting the oil inlet hose, I do not obtain a No Oil Alarm. Note: I have 75:1 premix in my tank and ran the boat in neutral at idle for at...

    Recirculator Hose Failures OMC

OK, I have these on order. In addition to the idle air bleed change, I'll be pulling the air silencer base to replace the blown recirc line and check the others. Thanks for the help on this Faztbullet !

    Recirculator Hose Failures OMC

OK, I will definitely change the idle air bleeds to .032" diameter (No. 32, p/n 320016). You suggested this change before when I mentioned I went to the Chris Carson Sport reeds during my powerhead rebuild. I just didn't get around to it. Can you recommend a source for these?

    Recirculator Hose Failures OMC

The idle air bleeds are currently stock No. 33 (.033"). Should I go .001" smaller to a No. 32 to rich'n it up a bit? I will add that strangely, I have to hunt for this fuel leak and have found the hose still attached to the check valve barb, but with the 3/8" slit along the hose end leaking...

    Recirculator Hose Failures OMC

On the two recirculator hose retrofits I did, one in 2012 the second in May of this year, I purchased the hose from reputable online sites. The hose has always been plyable and I'm pretty confident OEM quality. I ran out to the garage just now and found the remaining couple feet in a bag...

    Recirculator Hose Failures OMC

I have experienced four recirculator hose (1/16”) failures on my 1986 Johnson 150 over the past 18 years. All four occur in various locations where the hose attaches to one of the barb fittings on the intake manifold check valves. The failure is always a slit along the hose from the hose end...

No Oil Alarm Occurrences on Rebuilt 1986 Johnson 150 J150TXCDC

Very good point that I should have thought of prior to rebuilding the air motor and fuel diaphragm. I should have just replaced the the VRO since it is 13 years old and I was rebuilding the powerhead. I just ordered a new OEM VRO from "Leader's RPM". Faztbullet, as always, thanks for your reply !

No Oil Alarm Occurrences on Rebuilt 1986 Johnson 150 J150TXCDC

VRO No Oil Alarm Occurrences after VRO preventive maintenance rebuild with OMC/BRP Air Motor and Gas Diaphragm rebuild kits. No previous problems with VRO (4 wire) since it was installed in 2008. The No Oil Alarm occurred randomly four times over 60 gallons of fuel burn. Occurs shortly after...

    Johnson 150 Rebuild/Remanufacture Guidance

Yes, Jason at Jay's Block Shop was great to work with, his service was quick and he did a very nice job on my block. I was impressed he was able to clean up my cylinder scoring by only going .020" oversize.

    Johnson 150 Rebuild/Remanufacture Guidance

Backed the boat down the ramp with my home made test prop, hit the primer five times, turned the key and it fired right up! While this was what I hoped for, I was amazed it did not take a bit of coaxing to get her running. When the initial puff of smoke cleared, the tell tail was streaming...

    Johnson 150 Rebuild/Remanufacture Guidance

Alan, I already set the timing using the Joe Reeves method in the driveway. Actually, I didn't have to move the current setting as I confirmed I am 2 to 2 1/2 degrees retarded. Using the test prop, at what point in the break in period do I run it up to 5500 RPM and set the WOT timing...

    Johnson 150 Rebuild/Remanufacture Guidance

I will make a test prop by removing an inch from the end of an old 14 1/2 x 19 aluminum prop. My Service Manual states the following for Break-In Procedure: First 5 - 10 minute, operate engine at a fast idle. Remainder of First Hour: Engine should be operated at boat planing speed, but not over...
