1988 force 125 won’t stay on in water

The major different you have between running on muff and running in water is when in water you have the water back pressure. First check to run in water without the engine top cover on. Maybe you have an exhaust leak, check for leaks around the exhaust cover plate and the exhaust/water rubber...

    Tune Up Specs 1973 Johnson 50HP 50ESL73R

Sounds like it is running on one cylinder. Check for spark again with a timing light when running. I do not trust the cheaper inline spark tester, that is why I suggest you to use a timing light. I have use these cheap inline tester and got spark (it flashes) and when I check with a spark tester...

1998 Force 120 overheating under load

Do as topgun3690 says, use a IR thermometer and "shoot" at the head when the alarm goes off. You can test the sensor but hard to get an exactly value when it goes off (bimetal switch). Put it in a can with water and heat it up on a stove, check with a VOM when the switch close and check the...

The thermostat is under the small cover just above the top spark plug. Be really careful when removing the screws, they can snap very easy. Charging system Not Working?

Check with a VOM if the alternator is putting out any AC voltage. Do it with the wires connected to the regulator/rectifier. Then check if there is any DC voltage output more then battery voltage at the regulator/rectifier. Outboardignitiondotcom have troubleshoot chart for the regulator/rectifier.

    Charging system Not Working?

The alternator (stator) will start to charge at about 1100-1200 RPM and the regulator/rectifier would regulate the voltageup to about 15-16VDC independent RPM. You should see voltage rise at the battery over battery voltage at about 1200 RPM.

Clean the carb and set the air/fuel mixture screw 1 turn out from lightly seated. Then you have to fine tune it in water and in gear. 1-11/2 turn out for the air/fuel mixture screw would be a good set point.
