losing forward gear after running a while

Having a REALLY annoying issue with the drive on my boat (1980 Merc 120 with MC (? its factory....) drive) when first starting out at the lake, or testing at home, I have forward and reverse, no issues at all. Push the side control forward, or rear to the detent, and it engages just fine, no...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

that engine has been around the block at least 2x at this point. Your pistons are .040 oversized, and who knows if the crank has been ground. If it needs a refresh, you may well be better off with another motor. I dont know what max oversize for the 302 is, but i think .060 is about all you can...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

60 pounds to get the engine professionally checked is to me, at least a bargain. At least then you know what you are working with, and arent playing the "what if" game.

    Busiest day of the year

the boat is safely on its trailer in the driveway, and the family and I will enjoy the fireworks from the back porch..... too many idiots on a normal weekend, dont need to compound that with the once a year crowd that really gets stupid

    MR-1 U Joint Bellows Leak

shifter should be straight fore/aft when in forward gear, this allows it to slide right together.

What to use to patch hole on hull of Aluminum Boat

A proper way to repair would be to either have it welded, or have a patch riveted over it with a permanent sealer (probably 5200) between the two pieces. You can bandaid it with other methods, but you will have to monitor it.

    120 HP mercruiser 153 ci 2.5 L issues

The 90 degree fitting on the top of your carb is where the pump drain goes. It’s plainly visible in your first pic

    120 HP mercruiser 153 ci 2.5 L issues

with a good rebuild kit (mercrusier preferably) and a little time and knowledge (some of the instructions arent that clear) you will have the better carb. Main thing, take pictures, and get it CLEAN inside. any crap in the passages will cause issues. Time and patience are your freinds.

    120 HP mercruiser 153 ci 2.5 L issues

the issue with the Amazon (and other sourced) knockoff carbs is that they are usually poor workmanship and materials. You can try to go with smaller jetting, but that wont help if the castings are leaking, and the gasket surfaces arent flat and true (and therefore dont seal) There can also be...

    120 HP mercruiser 153 ci 2.5 L issues

Very likely. Porous castings aren’t unheard of, along with poor workmanship (sealing) the Amazon repops aren’t the best, but the price is good. A reworked oem carb is your best bet

Black and sooty is excessive fuel. A vacuum leak will have it run lean, which will give whitish tips to the plugs

a carburetor shouldn't spill fuel like this, right?

I would agree, if the pump is specced at the proper 4-7 psi. If however it’s specced closer to 9-10, that’s where I would put in a regulator. OP hasn’t stated if it’s a new pump or the old original that now has an overactive sense of purpose. Either way, he needs to get that rail pressure down some

    120 HP mercruiser 153 ci 2.5 L issues

The first is the fitting where the hose from the pump should go. The second is how the breather attaches to the spark arrestor. Yours may be slightly different, or you could be missing parts. Being older either is possible

    120 HP mercruiser 153 ci 2.5 L issues

there should be a fitting on the air horn of the carb (or nearby) that the line you have blocked off should run to. A good functioning carburetor is the next step. as for the breather, venting to air is "ok" but not ideal. Your air cleaner (actually just a spark arrestor) should have a...

a carburetor shouldn't spill fuel like this, right?

as stated, at 9-10 psi you are likely overcoming the floats. Either different pump with less pressure, or an inline regulator to get that down to 4-7 psi would be where I would start.

that hose is the breather, and goes to the air cleaner.

    120 HP mercruiser 153 ci 2.5 L issues

I would start by getting rid of the chinesium carburetor. 99% are a poorly made copy of the original and do not function well. Find a good rebuilt original. the port you have blocked on the pump is the overflow that in the event of a ruptured diaphragm allows the fuel to go into the carburetor...
