Starter engaging with one bolt installed, spins but does not engage when both bolts are installed

sounds like its definitely time to check the starter pinion (AKA bendix) gear to flywheel clearance, and also the condition of the ring gear.

Starter engaging with one bolt installed, spins but does not engage when both bolts are installed

I am assuming that you re-installed the same starter? may want to check the clearance between the bendix shaft and the flywheel, IIRC on Chevy auto's its around 1/8 inch (check this number, Its been a while since I had to check one). If you do not have enough clearance, the gear will not pop out...

    water in all 4 cylinders

ok, in case anyone wants to see (kinda) what the inside of a burned out elbow looks like, here ya go. You can see it much clearer in person, but there is an obvious "step" where the inner wall between the water jacket and the exhaust tract as seen from the outlet nipple where it connects to the...

    water in all 4 cylinders

Already did this. Drained milkshake yesterday, and left the drain plug out overnight. After finding Old Faithful this morning out of the plug holes, I sprayed wd-40 into the cylinders and cranked it over, then repeated a couple more times for good measure. After finding the elbow shot and the...

    water in all 4 cylinders

if one has to go, thats the best one.... still need to acetone test the manifold. One of the downsides to living in a "small" town, is that the stores open late on Sunday, and are closed on Holidays..... I need more acetone and a couple shorter bolts to hold one of the plates on the...

    water in all 4 cylinders

well, we have a verdict.... its coming in through the exhaust..... pulled the upper intake, and there are signs of water in the past, but no standing water in the intake side of the house. Exhaust side is different.... pulled the elbow, and there was water up to the port level in the manifold...

    water in all 4 cylinders

Ill get the manifold pulled here today and start checking it. What is a good way to seal the engine to test it. This is an open system, so there is no radiator cap to hook the tester to. My guess is to seal off the port going to the manifold, and hope for the best? I got to find my...

Engine is a 1980 "ish" vintage Mercruiser 120 S/N 5612859. During testing for re-commissioning, I am running on hose water hooked direct to the inlet hose (no drive installed). Engine runs good, but am getting milkshake in the crankcase, and when I pulled the plugs this morning, and cranked it...

    Starting problems.

this refers to the 4150 series as used on other Mercruiser engines. the 4150 is a mechanical secondary double pumper that was used on the larger 440/460 Cyclone and 475 Turbo engines. Its the only reference to a Holley carb that shows up in the service manual. Not quite what you are looking for...

    Starting problems.

should not be. Just need to find one that is "marine rated". IIRC Holley has a few that were used on the Mercruiser line, and IIRC one of them was vacuum secondary. Ill dig through the manual and see what I can come up with for you digging through the manual got me zip.... here is a page from...

    Starting problems.

the secondaries are mechanical, the air valves at the top of the bore open in response to airflow. When these open, it raises the metering rods as well for more fuel.

Mercruiser 3.0 diagnosis / serial number decode

if it has a GM derived carburetor, there is one in the inlet. You have the fitting from the pump that screws into a larger "hex" type thingy. Unscrew the larger hex piece and the filter resides in there with a spring. Beware of the spring.....
