    Serial number

Yep, you have to be cognizant of what "type" of flare is used, there is 37 degree (AN/JIC) 45 degree (automotive) and of course the metric bubble flare. Using a single flare where a double flare was used for is a recipe for leaks, even if the angle is correct, as the flared section will be...

Starter starts something spinning in the back of engine only, nothing in the front.

exactly. check the simple stuff first before pulling engine out. Wouldnt be the first starter that failed and the bendix gear failed to extend, or partially extend making one hell of a racket at the back of the motor

    rebuilt 3.0

Ill second the Rotella, or other "diesel" oils in 15W40. Not only do they have all the vitamins and minerals that the older motors need, they are relatively cheap to boot.

Replacing bunks with boat on trailer (too far to get to lift or splash)

ok, boat and trailer have been out of the water since at least 2013, and the bunks are shot. Since I live about 40 miles from the nearest water to splash the boat (finishing rebuild), I would like to replace the rotten bunks with new wood before towing a longer distance. (the wood is REALLY bad...

    Serial number

problem is, he is in Australia, so the brake line may be a 10mm bubble flared type locally. This is why I mentioned reusing the originals (if not rounded/stripped) and reflaring with double flare.

    Serial number

likely the steel brake line has flares on the end of it that hold the fittings in place and seal the line. If your old line has usable fittings they could conceivably be re-used if you have someone who can redo the double flare, otherwise double flaring tools are readily available on eBay or...

    Bearing Hub won't slide on

just a little bit of galling there that needs to be cleaned up. 5 minutes with a file, and you will be back in business. Dont go nuts on it, just a couple of strokes with a file, test fit, rinse and repeat until the hub slides on nicely. When the bearing failed, it caught on the spindle, and...

Furst boat and first restoration project, have some questions.

impellers are a maintenance item, generally regarded as once a year/every second year service items. nothing will ruin your day (and motor) faster than an impeller going tits up at an inopportune time. They are easy to change, so not really worth NOT doing.

    MerCruiser throttle cable

Not having any luck finding the type throttle cable I need. Goes on a 1980 120 MerCruiser 4 banger. Serial number and carb end of cable are in the pics. Manuals have been no help, same with exploded diagrams… Anyone got any ideas here????

Bottom up restoration! MY FIRST BOAT

depending on the size of the boat, 2 gallons should be enough. Yours looks on the small size, so it shouldnt be a problem. There is the FAQ thread up the top that has quite a few rebuild threads in it, along with all the info you should need. There are others here that know that area better than...

Bottom up restoration! MY FIRST BOAT

first one I did (before joining here, and learning better) I used the cans. they will work, but are a pain in the ass. Pour in 2 part foam works MUCH better, and in the long run is actually cheaper. Those cans add up fast

Bottom up restoration! MY FIRST BOAT

first step is get a large amount of trash cans and trash bags to store everything that needs to come out of the boat. Next step after that is to remove all the foam and mulch that used to be the wood inside the boat. Once you have all that done, you can assess whats left, and what materials you...

    minor hole repairs

PB tinted to match was a no-go. I sanded it back to be sure to get to "good" glass for a permanent bond, I felt just shooting some PB in the screw holes wouldnt get any surface area for a good bite. The gelcoat is in dire need of a coat of paint, its sun damaged and severely faded with some...

    minor hole repairs

whelp, second coat of peanut butter in and cured. Sanded back and primed for paint. May need a touch of spot putty in a couple of pinholes, but thats to be expected anyway.

    minor hole repairs

filling in some un-needed screw holes in the boat, (speedo senders, fish finder transducers and such, small screw sized holes, and yes, I feathered it out to about 3" around the hole in question) and have a quick question. I am grinding back the glass (gelcoat is shot, will be sanding, priming...
