    Hydrofoil or Trim Tabs??

Maybe I've missed it somewhere in the topic: how is the motor trimmed? I'm assuming you can trim the outboard before you blast off? (That doesn't feel like the answer, but it doesn't hurt to ask)

    Getting started in northern Washington.

For me: on a boat like that between 16' and 18' on your kinda' water I wouldn't want much less than 75HP on the bottom end.

    Considering New Boat

I don't have anything bad to say about Stingray or Tahoe. See a lot of them out on the water around here. But I'm partial to the Regal. I like the company and the general quality of their builds. If buying brand new, Regal is where I would lean.

    Hydrofoil or Trim Tabs??

@Popeye251 - Am I catching this correctly that you bought the boat new from a dealer? And the boat with three people and gear on board (but not overweight above MAX Capacity) won't do over 13MPH? Because if I've got that right, it's time to bring the dealer into the equation (I think). That...

    Hydrofoil or Trim Tabs??

I agree ^^^ much bigger problem at hand. That boat should barely be planing at 13MPH, and that's a 17' tinny with 115HP ... I had a 16' with a 50HP fiberglass that could hold 20MPH, and the 50HP was 50% the max HP. Something is wrong. Have you verified the boats weight with the outboard to...

    "Geared" Boom

There ya' go! Yeah: it's a furler then. That was a new thing in the 1960s. Like I said, never had one of any kind. But the new one's look pretty slick. If you can manage to tug on the boom enough to get it loose while underway, you can furl it back down to reduce sail area. I've heard mixed...

Please help looking at a boat tomorrow

OMCs been out of the stern drive business since the mid 90s. On the Cobra's parts are still pretty available, but like racerone said sometimes you can't find anyone to work on 'em. Merc and Volvo are more popular. I'm not quite following the description of what's wrong. When out of gear the...

What is this ratcheting pulley and tackle.

True: emeregency response stays with you a long time. I'm referring to the Thunder Bay up by Alpena. @Race1958 - Got pics? There's a fella' down by me who built a plywood sloop a couple years ago. I see him on the lake from time to time. Neat lookin' boat. Slow goer (it's not built for...

What is this ratcheting pulley and tackle.

That's cool ^^^^ my Grandfather raced the Port Huron to Mac race a couple of times. Don't know how much racing past that, but he sailed a ton on Thunder Bay. I sailed with him on inland lakes. Sorry for the slight hijack @Race1948

What is this ratcheting pulley and tackle.

@racerone I didn't know you were a blow-boat guy! I had to go look up a "preventer," had never heard of one!

Can anyone help me identify this boat?

Unlike cars, boats don't just grab the extra horse power and go faster. The fluid influence of water changes how horse power effect things. Hulls are designed for speed ranges, not necessarily meaning you can't overpower them. Instead adding power can have anywhere between little effect at...

Buying a boat with a rebuilt sterndrive??

Stringers are the "bones" of the boat. Under the deck, they give the hull it's rigidity. Dunno' if Larson was using wood in the stringers in 2003, but you can't really tell from lookin'. If you're standing on a surface similar to the hull of the boat, then the deck is probably fiberglass...

    "Geared" Boom

I'm outside any real experience, but is there a pin in the gooseneck that can be removed easily to allow it to roll counter clockwise? The boom systems like that were born in the 1960s. All by hand, no cranks for those I believe. I think the older sets were designed so you could easily unfurl...

Can anyone help me identify this boat?

More than. Might want to do a little research before you go that powerful with it. That boat wasn't designed for quite that much power. Not sure exactly how the hull would react to it. Dunno' that I would go all the way back to 120, but maybe meet it somewhere in between.

    "Geared" Boom

Could that be a furler for the main sail? I've never had one, so I'm not sure how they unlock, but they've always looked kinda' handy. Welcome aboard.
