    Prop Selection - Bayliner 175

I performed a compression test, and it seemed good to me. Results were: 171, 182, 181, 171 psi on cylinders 1-4 respectively. It did seem to me to be over-revving at WOT, pushing 5300 if i recall correctly (I didn't run it for very long at WOT considering how high it was). I think the manual...

    Timing is retarded ;-)

Thanks, I started a separate thread for my prop issue. Leaning towards a 19 pitch, 14.25” diameter Merc 3 blade aluminum. I have also done outdrive work that I didn’t mention, which was replacing the impeller, gear oil, a melted oil seal carrier, and melted pickup tube, main gasket and o ring...

    Prop Selection - Bayliner 175

New to me 2015 Bayliner 175 w/ Merc 3.0 Alpha 1 Gen 2. Prior owner put completely the wrong prop on there, boat barely gets out of the hole at WOT and only 2 passengers/no gear. The prior owner put an outboard prop on there that’s the wrong everything, flow through exhaust hub, 17 pitch, 13.75...

    Leak into bilge, bellows?

That’s a good point about trim. At the dock I had to have it fully trimmed up due to shallow depth, and it appeared to me the rate of water intrusion was higher sitting at the dock, rather than when driving on the water trimmed down. This does point me to bellows. It’s such a tight engine...

    Timing is retarded ;-)

The boat is new to me, as far as I know the prior owner neglected the boat and only did oil changes during his 10 years of ownership. Yesterday was the first time I’ve had this boat out on the water it definitely seemed underpowered, but the prior owner also put the wrong prop on there (which...

    Timing is retarded ;-)

I checked my timing today (2015 Merc 3.0) following the service manual procedure (jumper on distributor, cutout switch bypassed). I observed the following: Base initial timing w/ jumper was spot on at 2* atdc; idle timing w/o jumper was also spot on at 15*, however timing at 3000 rpm was only...

    Leak into bilge, bellows?

First time taking out a new to me boat today. 2015 Bayliner 175 i/o. Drove the boat for about an hour and noticed a small amount in the bilge, maybe 1” or so. Boat sat at the dock for 4 hours and thankfully I checked, bilge was pretty much full, maybe 6”. It wasn’t obvious to me where the...

Testing Ignition Coil - no continuity?

Problem solved! The engine fired up much easier today, and I observed the whistle as expected from the TKS unit during warmup, which then went away after a few minutes. I’m fairly sure that I dislodged a small particle of debris from the TKS bore the other day when I was spraying carb cleaner...

Testing Ignition Coil - no continuity?

I decided to pull off the TKS enrichment module and bench tested it by applying 12 volts for ~5-10 mins. The module warmed up to the touch on the back (as expected), and the plunger also slowly extended ~10mm (as expected, not sure what the extension range spec is though). I also gave the TKS...

Testing Ignition Coil - no continuity?

Yeah, I get it’s not efi, not expecting it to fire up immediately, just seems like an excessively hard start. This is a tks carb. I pulled the tks unit off the carb to inspect and it seems fine visually. Though I’m not sure if there’s a way to test it. It does seem to make some sense that the...

Testing Ignition Coil - no continuity?

I’m trying to track down the cause of hard starting when cold (takes roughly 10-15 five second cranks, including throttle pumps, to start, starts well when warm, runs and idles well). This is on a 2015 3.0L, low hours. Compression test is good. Full tune up (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel...

    Fuel System Question

Anyone have an idea of what this fuel system part circled in the pic below (black cylinder) is/does? It appears to be sitting in line on the fuel vent hose mounted on top of the tank. This is on a 2015 Bayliner 175.

Impeller Job - Mating Surface Corrosion

Thanks for the help all. I got it all put back together last weekend. Hopefully all goes well when I test it out.

    Exhaust Boots Install

Do y’all put any sort of lubricant on the inside of the rubber exhaust boots when installing so as to make future removal easier? Thought about 24C, but wasn’t sure if that would degrade the rubber. Thanks

Impeller Job - Mating Surface Corrosion

The oil seal carrier for the outdrive arrived today as well p/n 8M0214948. I checked the Mercruiser site you linked above and this is listed as an alternate part if you expand the plus icon. It has 8 feet, and a manufacture date from 6 months ago. It appears to be an exact match of melted one I...

Yes, the elbow looks to be in even better shape. Thanks Muc!

Impeller Job - Mating Surface Corrosion

I’m guessing that perhaps the perfect seal should only be applied to the riser gasket, and not the block or carb gasket, since only the riser gasket is exposed to water, whereas the other 2 are only air.

Impeller Job - Mating Surface Corrosion

Below are pics of the exhaust manifold cleaned up. I did my best not to scratch the surface with the gasket scraper but that gasket was REALLY stuck on there, probably the worst one i've dealt with. The scratches are pretty shallow though. Pics 2 through 5 are the inside of each of the 4 water...

Impeller Job - Mating Surface Corrosion

Thanks a lot MUC for the advice! I think the site i ordered from has the old carrier PN listed, but ships the updated part design - pics of it show it as yellow, but with 8 feet on the bottom, will confirm once received. I'll report back on the mating surface of the exhaust manifold once i get...
