1978 5.7l pre-alpha with alpha gen 1 drive over heating

Once you disassemble your motor it is too late to "pressure test your heads". That is crap. Always do cooling system pressure test before teardown. Screwing yourself on ever knowing for sure if there are any cracks until you get it back together. After cooling system pressure test do a leak...

4.3 Alpha One - Gimball bearing issue

Only way you get water coming out the lower cable housing is if the water passage o-ring isn't doing its job. Agree with all said by other posters here. The devil is always in the details. Thoroughly clean the gimbal bearing pocket in the housing and inspect very closely. All it takes is a crack...

1978 5.7l pre-alpha with alpha gen 1 drive over heating

Need to pressure test the cooling system. Should rent/buy a leak down tester and track down your low compression. May very well be two different problems.

    Tachometer Bouncing Causing Engine Surging

Is there any tuning available for the Sniper in a marine deployment? Just wondering how well that works. Automotive fuel flows are massively different from marine.

NEW GM 5.7 MOTOR SERVICE MANUAL

You could also use #24. For basic info they will be nearly duplicated.

NEW GM 5.7 MOTOR SERVICE MANUAL

Merc motor manual isn't going to help you much. Edelbrock makes a great carb adjustment manual, same with the Delco EST manual that cam e with the disty - you need to keep both in a binder. You do need the Manual #6 for your drive. You motor would use #17. I see it for $87 at...

    No spark, no service manual...

This is for the V6. Virtually the same on where what color wires go where. What you asked doesn't match enough of the system for a conversation starter.

NEW GM 5.7 MOTOR SERVICE MANUAL

Kind of need to know what configuration. What makes a 96-2000 motor is carb, MPI, accessories, ignition.

I remember those. And you are dating yourself. Those external adjustments even worked some of the time.

Mercruiser Alpha One Gen I Winterization

Unfortunately you are going to have to figure out how to drain the block. Trying to replace the water with antifreeze is how blocks are cracked when you end up pushing antifreeze through the other end without getting enough in the block to prevent freezing.

    Starting issue

Unbolt and wire brush your connections, especially the ground - at both ends. Make em shiny enough to eat with.

    Whats wrong with my boat?

Well, you got me there. No idea. I am never afraid to clean and kit a carburetor that has any kind of issues though. It is a worthwhile task on a carburetor that scarfed some crap.

Mercruiser Alpha One Gen I Winterization

I remove my drive as well - make sure you plug the gimbal bearing with a rag or sumthin. Nasty mess when a critter sneaks through and makes a home in your bilge.

    Whats wrong with my boat?

Spraying carb cleaner on your carb is as useful as pouring vodka on your hair when you want a drink. Doesn't do anything. Need to disassemble, clean everything and put a kit in it. Other possibility is a vacuum leak. Might take an unlit propane torch and aim it around the intake manifold and...

Mercrusier 350 MAG MPI - RPM issue under a load

I looked for it but didn't find. Did this motor get run on the Diacom software?

Ever see a twisted drive shaft?

Upper case gears gobbled a tooth and froze up, stopping your motor. Lucky it didn't put something through the gear case.

Mercrusier 350 MAG MPI - RPM issue under a load

This seems all wrong. An 18 pitch is not going to be incredibly far off that you cannot get over 3400 RPM - no way. Are we sure the drive gearing is right for this boat and motor. You would need to drop down to a 12 or 11 pitch to get RPMs in proper range and that makes no sense at all.

    Shifting very difficult

Double check that the set screw on the end of the slider is down *almost* tight against the cable end crimp. Looks/sounds to me like that was not set up correctly.
